Last Night in Soho teaser trailer celebrates 60s style and seediness – with added spooks

The teaser trailer for Edgar Wright’s upcoming film Last Night in Soho has just dropped, and it looks edgy, vibrant and slightly creepy in all the right ways.

Last Night in Soho is a psychological thriller about a young girl, passionate in fashion design, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer.

However, 1960s London is not what it appears, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences.

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) and Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit) in an intriguing dual role, the trailer is heavy on atmosphere, featuring a haunting unaccompanied version of Petula Clark’s Downtown as sung by Taylor-Joy.

It looks like McKenzie’s character becomes more and more intwined with Taylor-Joy’s existence in the 1960s, as her fashion and hair inspiration turns into something less voluntary and rather more sinister.

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith makes an appearance in the trailer at the legendary nigh-time hotspot Café de Paris, which features prominently as the trailer indulges in moody night-time vibes, celebrating the seediness and style of sixties Soho.

The rest of the impressive cast includes Terence Stamp, Diana Rigg, Rita Tushingham, Michael Ajao and Synnøve Karlsen.

Reaction to the Baby Driver director’s latest project has been immediately positive, with Wright’s colleagues lining up to congratulate him on the film.

Get Out director Jordan Peele shared the trailer, writing: ‘Edgar. Wright. Always. Delivers.’

Meanwhile Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn commented ‘Can’t wait!’, while actor Seth Green said: ‘This looks like my new favourite movie’.

Star Trek director and producer JJ Abrams proudly declared: ‘My dear friend has done it again!’

Fans were excited to see Wright going down a slightly more serious route when it comes to horror, after his Nick Frost and Simon Pegg partnership for the light-hearted Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, by which Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End are also known.

‘Edgar making a horror film?? F*** yeah’, wrote one user, while others were excited by his potential nods to other 1960s films in the trailer, such as Carnival of Souls and Clouzot’s Inferno – as well as pride of place for a Thunderball cinema marquee.

‘Love the visual references to Clouzot’s Inferno screen tests… and to Bava/Argento gialli’, name-dropped one film aficionado.

Or as one true Wright fan put it: ‘How’s that for a slice of fried gold?’

Last Night in Soho is due to release in cinemas in October.
