Red Bull Issue Counter Threat to Mercedes’ Toto Wolff Over Baku F1 Protests
The Mercedes vs Red Bull rivalry has certainly dominated the on track action so far. But it looks as though their battle may extend outside the track too, indeed the signs of a verbal war are already there regarding the topic of ‘flexi-wings.’ The Silver Arrows have already threatened the Austrian team of staging protests because they feel that Red Bull’s rear wing flexibility is giving them an undue pace advantage. However, the Milton Keynes-based outfit aren’t willing to sit back. It appears that their advisor Dr. Helmut Marko is willing to fight fire with fire.
In response to Wolff’s threats, Marko claims they too have reasons to protest. He said (translated via Google), “Wolff is free to protest in Baku. But he has to look at his front wings. Servus TV and Sky have records showing how close their front wing is to the ground.”
While F1 managing director Ross Brawn doesn’t believe such protests will actually happen in Baku, it’s worth keeping tabs on how Mercedes respond to this.
However, as far as the status of Red Bull’s rear wing goes, in Marko’s eyes it is completely legal.
Red Bull advisor doesn’t see any issue with the car’s rear wings
Pointing to the fact that the rear wing does indeed comply with the FIA tests, Marko said, “Our vehicle, like many other vehicles, has been accepted by the FIA and our vehicle has been confirmed to comply with the rules. For me, the FIA sets the procedure.”
However, the energy drink owned team isn’t out of trouble just yet. Following Mercedes’ complaints at the Spanish GP, the FIA has agreed to introduce new tests, beginning from the 15th of June. So only time will tell if Red Bull’s rear wing falls under the legal category or not.
Nevertheless, for the race in Baku, the Milton Keynes-based outfit should have no problems whatsoever. Coming off the back of a race win in Monaco, Red Bull will be in high spirits. They currently lead both championships and will be looking to stretch their advantage come the checkered flag in Azerbaijan.
