Chris Evans has joked about his ill-fated Top Gear stint after a car crash appearance on ITV’s This Morning.

The 58-year-old star lasted just one series of his planned three-year stint on the iconic motoring show – which the BBC has taken off air following Freddie Flintoff’s horror crash – before he quit and insisted he wasn’t the best fit.

Last year, he described his time on the programme as ‘water under the bridge’, and on Monday’s episode of This Morning he was able to poke fun about the whole situation.

He literally drove right into the actual studio to meet hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley, and skidded on the floor as he tried to stop before crashing into any of the set.

‘Cars on telly and me, it’s not gone well so far,’ he quipped.

He also took a tongue in cheek dig at Ant and Dec for the bumper Saturday Night Takeaway finale, as he teased: ‘Taxi for Ant and Dec! The show was so long I thought it’d still be going by now!’

As he arrived, Cat shouted that he was ‘going way too fast’, before adding: ‘Now that is how you do it ladies and gentlemen!’

Ben admitted there was ‘a little bit of nervousness in the gallery’, as Chris confessed: ‘Me too, to be honest!’

Later in the show, before his actual interview got underway, Ben and Cat revealed he had genuinely left skid marks on the floor when he arrived, while the hosts joked they would auction off the bits of flooring.

‘There was a real panic in our ear, and I think in Chris’ car, when the skidding started happening,’ Ben said.

‘They’re the right kind of skid marks! We need to put that into context, in case people can’t see the car,’ Chris pointed out, before revealing the unique story behind the car he was driving to promote his annual CarFest event, which returns for its 22nd edition this summer.

He added: ‘This car came from Ant and Dec’s last show, they were gonna give it away but they ran out of time.’

Chris quit Top Gear back in 2016, and insisted he gave it his ‘best shot’.

He tweeted at the time: ‘Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that’s not enough.

‘I feel like my standing aside is the single best thing I can now do to help the cause.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV1.
