Devin Haney put on an exemplary performance against the veteran Jorge Linares to defend his WBC lightweight title. The fight went for full 12-rounds and as many expected, the favorite Haney came out right on top in this fight and solidified his place.
This win was extremely vital for ‘The Dream’ as he’d faced no one as experienced and smart as Linares. That said, contending and winning against ‘El Nino de Oro’ is special in its own way for Haney and now he’s set himself up for a fight with hot shots of his division. Teofimo Lopez
Until now, the unified lightweight champ has traded enormous verbal blows with Haney. Furthermore, the pair have challenged each other for a gigantic clash but that never came to fruition. A fight between the two is highly anticipated and, more than anyone, the pair is keen to take each other on.
But for now, Lopez is aligned with George Kambosos Jr. for his mandatory title defense. And he’ll only be able to take on other contenders of the division once he gets past the Australian boxer on June 19th.
Vasyl Lomachenko
The former lightweight champion hasn’t stepped inside the ring ever since a loss to Teofimo Lopez in October 2020. However, ‘Loma’ is eager to reclaim his throne and sit back on the top. Moreover, the only fight he’s asked for is a rematch with ‘The Takover’. But since the latter is aligned for a fight on June 19, the Ukrainian boxer will have to wait and fight someone else.
With that, a fight between him and Haney could be made, so that the winner earns his ticket to fight Lopez in an undisputed title fight.
Ryan Garcia
In January 2021, Garcia put on a beating to the Brit Luke Campbell and claimed the WBC interim lightweight belt. Furthermore, he put himself on top of the contention to face Haney.
But due to some uncertainties, the fight between the duo couldn’t materialize. And consequently, due to inactivity and lack of intent for his title defense, Garcia got stripped off his hard-earned strap.
Now in order to face Haney, he will have to show some activity on his resume and simultaneously book a fight with the Californian.
