Martin Roberts has spoken about the mental impact of his health scare.
In April 2022, the Homes Under the Hammer host learned he was suffering from pericardial effusion – a condition in which fluid builds up in the structure surrounding the heart – and he was rushed to the hospital to undergo emergency surgery.
At the time, Martin revealed he could have had ‘hours to live’ had he not had the operation. He is still now having regular check-ups to monitor his health.
The 60-year-old admitted that while he was able to overcome the physical element, the mental scars from his scare haven’t healed.
‘I can’t understate the mental after-effects of what happened to me. The physical stuff you get over, but it’s the overriding thought it could have all ended,’ he shared.
Martin added to the Daily Mirror: ‘Everything you tried to do, and your family, you realise it could all be gone. I was told I needed to slow down and I’ve gone the other way.’

Now, the former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! campmate, who has children Megan and Scott with wife Kirsty Roberts, is determined to live life to its fullest.
‘The thought it could end so quickly made me desperate to do all I can because I don’t know how much longer I’ve got left. None of us do,’ he pointed out.
‘Hopefully I’ve got many years but you never know. That whole thing that happened to me makes you realise how thin a thread we dangle from. But you can’t go through life living in that fear.’

Martin, who tried extreme therapies on The Big Celebrity Detox, is using some of his time to improve the lives of troubled teenagers through a new project.
The TV presenter, who is usually based in Bath, purchased the tired pub and hotel in the Welsh town of Blaencwm, Rhondda Valley, and has recruited youngsters to help him turn it into a community hotspot. The renovations began in January 2023 and are set to finish this summer with Martin in talks to turn the transformation of Hendrewen Hotel into a TV show.
He explained: ‘I’ve been given this opportunity to change kids’ lives and I feel so privileged.
‘This is an ambitious project, the building was closed at the start of lockdown and the village lost its heart. I thought, “This needs me.” It’s turned into a major community project.’ The TV star said he has ‘no time to die’.
Homes Under the Hammer airs Sunday-Friday at 11:15 on BBC One
