Fans are eagerly awaiting the fifth season of Money Heist to hit our screens in September, but some believe the new instalment will begin with the death of the Professor.

The hugely popular Spanish crime drama – also known as La casa de papel (The House of Paper) – is set to conclude with two volumes making up the fifth and final series.

Netflix confirmed the heist will end with two instalments of five episodes each – one launching on September 3, and another coming on December 3.

The Spanish TV series created by Álex Pina follows a team, led by a man named the Professor (Álvaro Morte), as they carry out intricate, dangerous heists that have been months in the making.

Fans have suggested The Professor could meet his end in the very first episode of the new season.

Following some dramatic surprises at the end of Part 4, viewers were left on the edge of their seats.

The Professor’s crew – which includes Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó), Palermo (Martín Berrote), Denver (Jaime Lorente) – were preparing to go to battle after the death of Nairobi (Alba Flores), while still being besieged by police on all sides within the Bank of Spain’s gates.

Meanwhile, disgraced inspector Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri) managed to penetrate the Professor’s lair.

With a revolver held at his head at the end of the series, several viewers suspected that Alicia may have already pulled the trigger as soon as the credits began to roll.

Due to the pandemic, fans have been waiting for well over a year for the latest instalment.

In the mean time, they have taken to Reddit to share their theories, with many saying they think he dies.

One viewer proposed an Avengers-style prologue to the new season: ‘In the first part we start with a big death in the first 10 minutes. The professor. Just like Loki.’

The formidable villain Thanos (Josh Brolin) killed fan favourite Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in the 2018 Marvel film Avengers: Infinity War.

Since Money Heist is also being broken into two parts for its last instalment, this astute viewer suggested that the Professor’s death could be the perfect way to kick off the conclusion.

This isn’t the only fan who thinks the Professor will die, as others also took to Reddit to share their theories on his death.

‘The Professor will sacrifice himself to save the gang, that is, he will be killed,’ one said.

‘I have a feeling [the Professor] will [die]. I just think it would be quite a good end to the series, like the ultimate and final death,’ said another.

Another viewer said they agreed before adding: ‘I can totally see [the Professor] dying next season.’

Many think the Professor dying could be a perfectly tragic twist for the show.

‘If the writers want a tragic ending then yes I think the Professor will die. But if they want a bittersweet ending (like the end of part 2) I don’t think he will die,’ another Redditor commented.

Money Heist Part 5: Volume 1 will be released on Friday, September 3 on Netflix. Volume 2 is coming Friday, December 3.
