The director behind the live action Zelda movie has been talking about his plans again and he hasn’t yet ruled out John Cena as Navi.

Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo is doubling down on its future film projects with a sequel and a live action Legend Of Zelda movie.

While we know what to expect from Mario’s big screen adventures, a Zelda movie feels like a far more difficult prospect. Nintendo is working with Sony Pictures on the film, which will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad.

Wes Ball, who is best known for the Maze Runner trilogy is set to direct the Zelda movie, from a script written by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Detective Pikachu).

While he’s spoken about his hopes for the project in various interviews over the past few months, Ball has now tackled the subject once again, as he promotes his new film, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.

After he tweeted back in 2010 that he would love to see an entirely mo-cap version of The Legend Of Zelda, in the vein of James Cameron’s Avatar, Ball has seemingly had a change of heart, after working with Weta FX on Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’s motion capture.

Speaking to Polygon, Ball said, with a laugh, that an entirely mo-capped version of The Legend Of Zelda ‘probably isn’t his choice’. Instead he said he wants the film to be a little more ‘real’ and ‘grounded’ – although it’s unclear if this is just relating to the special effects.

It’s certainly difficult to imagine Link’s trademark windsock hat working without CGI, but maybe this is confirmation that he won’t be wearing it.

Ball further discussed his hopes for the Zelda movie in a Reddit Q&A. When asked if there’s any lessons he took from directing the Apes movie that will carry over to Zelda, he replied: ‘Keep the money on the screen. Be ambitious. Be confident in the talent around you. Try to do something great.’

Acknowledging that he expected a ‘ton of Zelda questions’, Ball explained: ‘I can’t say anything about it for now… Just that I love Zelda and I’ll work my ass off to make something great for us.’

Despite his reluctance to talk about the project, it didn’t stop him from responding to a question about whether John Cena will play the role of Navi. ‘You never know,’ he joked (at least, we assume it’s a joke).

At this point, the big question is who will play the lead roles. Euphoria star Hunter Schafer has expressed interest in playing Zelda, in response to fan castings, while some on social media have mentioned Mike Faist for the role of Link, following his breakout turns in Challengers and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story.

While Miyamoto confirmed in November last year that development on the Zelda movie had begun, it will likely be a few years away yet. On Twitter, he wrote: ‘It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.’
