John Leguizamo has spoken out against Patrick Swayze’s ‘angelic’ reputation, branding him ‘insecure’ and ‘difficult’ to work with.

The Ice Age actor, 63, shared the screen with the late star in To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar, which hit the big screen in September, 1995.

The flick showed the pair – joined by Wesley Snipes-  as three New York drag queens who set off on a cross-country road trip.

Swayze, who died in 2009 following a battle with pancreatic cancer, played Vida Boheme alongside Snipes’ Noxeema Jackson, while Leguizamo starred as their protégé, Chi-Chi Rodriguez

Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Julie Newmar, Michael Vartan and Robin Williams were also in the cast.

However, reflecting on his time on set during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Leguizamo claimed there were issues behind the scenes.

‘All I hear about Patrick Swayze was just what an absolute angel he was,’ the host began, before his guest quickly dispelled the rumors.

‘Hmm, that’s different than what I experienced,’ Leguizamo replied. ‘Rest in peace, I love him. He was just neurotic. I’m neurotic too, but I don’t know, he was just – it was difficult working with him.’

When Cohen suggested that the Ghost legend may have been a ‘perfectionist’, his colleague was having none of it.

‘I don’t know, just neurotic,’ he continued. ‘Maybe a tiny bit insecure. Wesley and I, we vibed, because we’re people of color, and we got each other.

‘I’m also an improviser, and he didn’t like that. He couldn’t keep up with it, and it would make him mad and upset sometimes. He’d be like, ‘Are you going to say a line like that?’

‘I go, “You know me, I’m going to do me. I’m going to just keep making up lines.” He goes, “Well, can you just say the line the way it is?” I go, “I can’t.” And the director didn’t want me to.’

Despite the issues, the movie hit the top spot at the US box office for two weeks, with Swayze and Leguizamo earning Golden Globes nominations – for best actor and best supporting actor respectively.

Elsewhere in the chat, the Romeo + Juliet actor also shared his pride at taking part in such an ‘important’ film.

‘It was very important because a lot of transgender kids, LGBTQ+ kids come up to me, who are now a little older – they said because of that show and my character, they felt confident to come out to their parents,’ he added.

‘I felt like, wow, that’s what art is supposed to do. Art is supposed to give people courage, art is supposed to teach people empathy, that’s what I got in the business for.’
