Many footballers like to distract themselves in their free time away from the sport, and some turn to video games, like Neymar who uploaded a video of himself losing a one-versus-one in Counter-Strike 2 and then ended up calling the game ‘broken’.
Another footballer who’s into gaming is Premier League top scorer, and EA Sports FC 24 cover star, Erling Haaland, and a new partnership with Clash Of Clans is set to provoke rival fans around the country.
A marketing push for the mobile strategy game promotes Haaland as its new playable character and has a billboard captioned, ‘He stole your trophies. Steal his gold.’ And it doesn’t stop there, there’s even a promotional video of the goalkeeper, who Haaland scored nine goals against, out for revenge.
Billboards of the Manchester City striker, complete with the provocative caption, is plastered all over Manchester, as well as London, and Liverpool – cities that house rival clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea.
Jose Garcia, the Honduras goalkeeper that conceded nine goals to the Norwegian star in an international youth match, is spearheading the attack on Haaland’s gold in a promotional video, where he says:
‘I have wanted my revenge on Erling Haaland for years and now I saw he is in Clash of Clans, I have my chance.’
There’s also a QR code attached to the billboards that allows fans to raid Haaland’s in-game village.
