Will the next console be even better? (Nintendo)

A reader is feeling very optimistic about the prospects for Nintendo’s next console and the potential for new games and next gen graphics.

I assume everyone’s going to be talking about Xbox this week, but I just can’t bring myself to join them. It’s all too depressing and while I haven’t owned one since the Xbox 360, you can bet I will never touch one of their consoles again… or probably even their games if they’re multiformat. To see developers treated like statistics on a spreadsheet, to be discarded at a moment’s notice, while these moron bosses pretend to be sad for 10 seconds before immediately changing the subject… I just can’t.

So I’ll change the subject myself and talk about what should’ve been the big news story of the week: Nintendo admitting they’ve got a new console coming out soon-ish.

I was particularly excited to see the news today (Friday) that yet another source suggests it’s as powerful as an Xbox Series S, which sounds so encouraging. I know it was overexcited fans playing internet detective, but we’ve heard this same suggestion multiple times now, so I’m going to dare to hope that it’s actually true.

The other hope is that Nintendo don’t go crazy, like PlayStation has. Sony has thrown everything away for no reason that I can understand (those PlayStation 5 sales figures were shocking, given how well they were doing before) but I really can’t see Nintendo suddenly making nothing but live service games. I’m sure they’ll try a few but they’re not going to be blind to why the Switch was such a massive success.

I’m less certain about how they’re going to navigate rising costs and development times though, as I didn’t find the recent pronouncement from the president all that reassuring. Although I get the impression it was fairly off the cuff and, as usual, he was trying not to give too much away. So, for the purposes of this feature, I’m going to assume that Nintendo are going to remain sensible and not spend eight years making each of their games.

With that settled, just imagine what they can do with a console as powerful as an Xbox Series S! Nintendo were really flexing their technical muscles with Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom but now imagine that in 4K (courtesy of DLSS), with much more detailed characters and textures. I’m not saying they’ll do that but just the idea that they could is exciting to me. And imagine what the next Zelda will look like, that’s made for the Switch 2 from the ground up!

The Switch is a great machine, probably the best console ever made, but it still had to live through the pandemic, which really slowed Nintendo down for a couple of years and we probably would’ve seen quite a few extra games for it if that hadn’t happened – like the rumoured 40th anniversary Donkey Kong game.

If we can avoid that happening again then Nintendo could have a clear run to make even more games, from both new and established franchises. You know they’ll do at least a few brand new games and the thought of new Nintendo IP is always so exciting. And yet, you can’t help thinking what they will do for the new Mario, the new Mario Kart, the new Metroid, and all the rest.

But the other big change this time round is that the Switch will be able to run almost all current gen games. The Xbox Series S has to be able, it’s Microsoft’s order, so the Switch 2 should be able to as well. Maybe not the very highest end ones, like maybe GTA 6, but if it’s a success then I’m sure even then Rockstar and Nintendo will find a way.

There’s hardly any difference between PlayStation 4 and 5 for most other games so I’m sure the Switch 2 will be fine, and you can be certain Microsoft will want to get as many of its games on there as it can, given how things are going for them right now.

There’re some potential potholes but I really think that if Nintendo avoid them – and if I can see them then they should certainly be able to – then the Switch 2 is going to end up the best console of all time, just like its predecessor.
