Assassin’s Creed Shadows – now you know its name (Ubisoft)

It’s not confirmed when exactly it will be out, but Ubisoft’s samurai and ninja themed Assassin’s Creed will get its first trailer this week.

It seems like we’ve been talking about what was previously known as Assassin’s Creed: Codename RED for years now, and yet even with the official announcement of its real name we still know virtually nothing about it.

All there’s been up till now is a few seconds of teaser trailer, showing a ninja-like assassin dropping down onto someone’s roof, and the reveal that it’s set in feudal Japan.

Today’s announcement confirms that the game’s name is actually Assassin’s Creed Shadows but beyond that we still won’t get more information until the cinematic (i.e. probably pre-rendered) cinematic trailer on May 15 at 5pm.

In the meantime, there’s an hourglass puzzle to crack on Ubisoft’s social media channels, which seems to involve a big giant time-keeping piece somewhere in Japan.

After the cinematic trailer, the game will no doubt also show up at the Ubisoft Forward event planned for June 10, at which point an autumn release date is expected to be confirmed – although technically Ubisoft has only said it’ll be out before next April.

What should also be unveiled at Ubisoft Forward is Assassin’s Creed Infinity, the mysterious live service hub that is supposed to link Shadows with all future games in the series. Although how that will work, and whether you’re expected to pay for it, is unclear.

As far as rumours go, it’s long been said that the game will feature two playable characters: a female ninja (presumably the one in the teaser) and an African, male samurai inspired by historical figure Yasuke.

There’s never been any leaks about the plot or other elements though, just snippets about destructible scenery and a greater emphasis on stealth than usual.

The two protagonists do seem to be distinct characters though, not just gender swapped versions of each other. That’s not the first time Ubisoft has done that though, following Jacob and Evie in 2015’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.
