The new season of Doctor Who has already enchanted fans with wild stories of space babies and of course Jinx Monsoon’s ominous Maestro.

Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson faced off against the music thief in 1960s London, with The Beatles’ love of music saving the day and everyone bursting into song.

However, dedicated fans noticed the musical number at the end of the episode had a familiar tune with very ominous connotations.

‘There’s always a twist at the end,’ the group sang repeatedly in a chord progression which mimicked that of the Giggle from the anniversary special.

This has led fans to believe we may still see more cameos from the famed Neil Patrick Harris’ The Toymaker – or an even more terrifying villain.

In the episode, which saw David Tennant’s Doctor bi-regenerate, Earth has become violent after a tiny tune called the ‘giggle’ was embedded in humans’ minds.

The Toymaker is an eternal being of infinite power and the embodiment of games who traps his victim through rigged odds.

As fans well know, the defeat of an antagonist is rarely final with the show famed for resurrecting villains over and over again; from Daleks to The Master.

He first appeared in The Celestial Toymaker, a William Hartnell episode from 1966,and fans speculate the continued use of the giggle progression could hint at this return.

Maestro is the child of the Toymaker, with their son Henry Arbinger (Harbinger) in tow, so it is clear that Russell T Davis intends to continue this plot line somehow.

Ncuti’s Doctor has been repeatedly warned about ‘the one who waits’ and given that the Toymaker is immortal with a huge vendetta it wouldn’t be entirely surprising.

However, there is a second and even more compelling suggestion that a villain from spin-off show The Sarah Jane Adventures could be this ominous ‘one’.

Some fans have suggested The Trickster – an eyeless, caped menace – could be set to take on the Doctor and might even be connected to Ruby Sunday.

This creature is also from the Pantheon of Discord, which were beings banished from the known universe by the Time Lords.

Much like Toymaker and Maestro, he feeds off energy and forces people to make a life-altering decision with (usually) devastating consequences.

In a TikTok, Sam Player – who runs Wholala Podcast – laid out why he believes this particular villain is returning.

‘In the Sarah Jane Adventures, Sky, her daughter was left on Sarah Jane’s doorstep as a foundling, not unlike Ruby Sunday,’ he shared.

Before Elisabeth Sladen’s death, showrunner Russell had reportedly said he wanted to craft a storyline where Sky is the daughter of the Trickster.

Ruby’s heritage has been a mystery that fans are desperate to solve, with plenty of wild theories flying.

‘Could he be using this plot point again for new Doctor Who?’ asked Sam. ‘I mean the person who left Ruby at the church is looking a little trickstery.’

Diving even deeper into Whoniverse law, Sam discussed the ‘memory Tardis’ in spin off series Tales of the Tardis which was created for the 60th anniversary.

In this show, Daniel Anthony returns as Clyde Langer – holding a cube owned by the Trickster and given to a previous victim after they chose for Sarah Jane to die instead of them.

The former companion fell off a pier to her death in the 60s, instead of her friend, and the entire course of history was altered.

A tenuous link, until Sam pointed out that the next series of Doctor Who has begun filming with the new companion and Ncuti rocking ’60s attire and frolicking around on a pier.

The memory Tardis is rumoured to be featured in upcoming episodes after the hodgepodge interior was seen in a trailer clip and Russell confirmed it would link to this season.

Compellingly, Sam added: ‘The song that Ruby sings when Maestro has her strung up and is told there is a hidden song within her soul is the exact song, tune, and melody as when Maria is opening up the Trickster’s cube.

‘The Trickster is returning as the head of the Pantheon, the one who waits, in the new series of Doctor Who.’

Doctor Who airs on Saturday nights on BBC One or stream from midnight.
