Where Is the Memorial Tournament Played? Get to Know Everything About the Muirfield Village Golf Club

The PGA Tour offers very little rest time for the golfers as the 2021 season is jam-packed with tournaments. We just saw the conclusion of the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial Country Club on Sunday and the subsequent Memorial Tournament is all set to begin on June 3. So what do we know about the venue which hosts the historic tournament every year?

There is a lot that one needs to learn about the Memorial Tournament. It is well known that the legendary Jack Nicklaus founded the event in 1976. Nicklaus has been hosting the event annually ever since, in honor of golfers who helped the sport scale great heights.

The Memorial Tournament has been played at the Muirfield Village Golf Club ever since its inception in 1976. The golf course is located in Dublin, Ohio, a suburb north of Columbus. The course got its name since it passes through a large neighborhood called Muirfield Village.

Origin of the Muirfield Village Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus along with Desmond Muirhead holds the honor of designing the exquisite layout at the Muirfield Village Golf Club. According to the official website, this golf course was the dream project of Nicklaus which he eventually fulfilled.

Nicklaus, an Ohio native, acquired the land to construct the golf course as early as 1966. However, the construction work did not begin until July 28, 1972, and it took two years to get everything done.

The layout at the Muirfield Village Golf Club spans 220 acres, including an 11-acre driving range. The first-ever game of golf at this venue was played between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf which took place on May 27, 1974. Nicklaus shot a 6-under 66, which stood as the course record until 1979.

The Muirfield Village Golf Club has often been named one of America’s greatest golf courses and has undergone extensive renovations since opening in 1974. Nicklaus has always been an architect of perfection and this layout offers a diverse playing experience for the golfers.

2021 Memorial Tournament: Course details

The golf course once again faced renovation before the 2021 Memorial Tournament. Last year, the organizers saw the layout turn hard and firm as Jon Rahm played his way to victory. The golf course posed a major challenge in 2020 but is expected to tone down this year.

The par-72, 7,543-yard layout will be the center of attraction over the next week as the world’s best golfers will attempt to master the Muirfield Village Golf Club. Over the years, Jack Nicklaus has massively altered the holes to keep it competitive. For instance, he recently changed the par-3 16th and par-4 17th holes.
