Piers Morgan may be a controversial broadcaster, but in a rare occurrence, viewers are convinced he’s got it 100% right.

The former Good Morning Britain host, 59, stunned Question Time viewers on Thursday with a ‘spot on’ rant about what young people have been through over the last few years.

Following the news Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is planning for 18-year-olds to carry out a mandatory form of National Service if the Conservative Party is voted back in at the upcoming General Election, Uncensored host Piers didn’t hold back.

Sat on Fiona Bruce’s BBC panel alongside Nigel Farage, he admitted he ‘likes the idea’ of national service but doesn’t think the plans have been thought through.

He went on: ‘There’s a strange situation going on with young people at the moment, where there’s a kind of epidemic of anxiety, depression, even suicide, and it has been exacerbated by the pandemic and this extraordinary period where they were locked away, couldn’t see their friends.

‘I think giving them something which gives them a regular sense of purpose, and I’m talking mainly about the vast body of people, the 700,000 or so who would do just community service, I think it would give them a sense of responsibility, a purpose and duty, and I think all those things are perfectly good things for young people to know.

‘Where it’s been tried around the world it has been very successful, and people have enjoyed it, they’ve come out better people.’

He then fumed: ‘But what about the nation’s service to our 18-year-olds? What about our sense of duty to them and what they’ve been through.

‘This is a generation who lost years, the best years of their life, they were banned from going to parties by people who then had a series of illicit parties themselves in the heart of government.

‘These are people who can’t afford to rent because it’s too expensive, they can’t afford to buy a home, they can’t afford to buy food, they can’t even afford to go to the pub.

‘They face punitive tuition fees for decades if they get to higher education, they probably won’t ever earn as much as their parents, they can’t see doctors, they can’t see dentists, they can’t go to A&E without a 15-hour wait, they can’t even go to the sea and have a swim without being covered in sewage.

‘This is what we’ve given this generation, so when we talk about national service and them doing their duty to this country, why don’t we start with a bit of service to them and showing them a bit of duty to safeguard their future.’

Piers’ comments were met by roaring applause from those in the audience and from viewers who are surprised by their own reaction, saying they agree with him for the first time.

‘Good grief, this is the 3rd time this year I’ve agreed with Piers Morgan. He’s absolutely spot on tho,’ Gillian wrote, to which Dingies said: ‘I feel filthy but I am the same.’

‘It’s scary, I’m very confused as well. I can’t fault a word he’s saying here,’ Jack added.

‘I hate to say it, but Piers is right,’ Neil said.

Andy wrote: ‘The pain killers I am on for my ruptured muscle in my back must have really kicked in as Piers is talking absolute sense to me then.’

‘Every molecule in my body just imploded for the same reason,’ Ali added.

‘The first time ever.. I’m 100% with Piers Morgan,’ Suzy said, while Keith commented: ‘The worlds gone mad. I agree with Piers Morgan. There, I said it. Time for a lie down.’

‘Well said ….. can’t believe I’m agreeing with piers morgan but genuinely well said,’ Gazza added.

Elsewhere on the programme, Piers opened up about NHS waiting lists directly affecting his family after his mother suffered a heart attack six months ago.

He said: ‘It was obviously a very scary time for her and a very scary time for the family, but it gave me a real insight into the reality of what was going on in our hospitals.

‘She was taken down in an ambulance at midnight to the South Coast, and she was kept on a trolley in an A&E corridor for seven hours, without any attention at all, but there were 35 other people out there in this corridor.

‘This is modern day Britain, it was absolutely shameful.’

He went on to say he received letters from people after interviewing Sunak about the issue, many of whom had lost family members in that same corridor after ‘waiting 20 hours’.

‘This has been a successive failure by successive governments for many years now, and the reality about the NHS is when my mother got up to get treated she got world-class treatment, we still have world-class doctors, world-class nurses, world-class staff, but the system to get into where they are is completely broken, and I think it is straightforward as to why.’

Piers is no stranger to holding the Tory party to account in recent months especially, and earlier this year, controversially wagered a £1,000 bet with Sunak about the Rwanda flights.

The brazen move took place during an interview on TalkTV’s Piers Morgan: Uncensored while discussing Sunak’s election promises, as he asked: ‘I’ll bet you a thousand pounds to a refugee charity that you don’t get anybody on those planes before the election. Will you take that bet?’

Sunak replied: ‘Well, I want to get the people on the planes. Of course I want to get the people on the planes,’ before shaking Piers’ hand.

Fast forward three months, and Piers has been celebrating his win, writing on X: ‘So, I win our £1,000 charity bet…’

He later added: ‘Dear Prime Minister @RishiSunak@10DowningStreet, following your admission today that no flights will take off to Rwanda before the election, please send £1000 to @BritishRedCross. Kind regards, Piers.’

Question Time is broadcast live on BBC iPlayer at 8pm every Thursday.
