Oprah Winfrey was recently hospitalised due to a severe stomach problem that left her experiencing symptoms from ‘both ends,’ her best friend Gayle King disclosed.

News anchor Gayle, 69, made this candid revelation on Tuesday, adding with a chuckle that she hoped Oprah, 70, wouldn’t be too upset by her openness.

‘She had some kind of stomach thing where – stomach flu where stuff was coming out of both ends. I won’t get too graphic,’ said Gayle.

‘But needless to say, she ended up in the hospital, dehydration, she had an IV, so it was a very serious thing,’ the TV personality continued.

‘But I wanted to make it clear, though, that it mattered to her and that it really bothered her that she couldn’t be here for you today.’

When asked about Oprah’s current health status, Gayle reassured viewers, saying, ‘She will be okay. She will be okay,’ she said on CBS Mornings.

Gayle made these comments while interviewing novelist David Wroblewski, whose new release, Familiaris, was selected for Oprah’s Book Club.

Normally, Oprah herself introduces her book club picks, but her illness prevented her from appearing on the air Tuesday.

After vividly explaining the reason behind Oprah’s absence, Gayle humorously added, ‘I hope she’s not mad at me for sharing that detail.’

A spokesperson for Oprah told People, that the host is ‘recovering’ following the GI issues and ‘received an IV due to dehydration at the recommendation of her doctor.’

‘She is resting and feeling better every day,’ they added.

The news comes after Oprah lost a noticable amount of weight in recent months by taking weight loss drugs similar to Ozempic.

The talk show host faced some backlash for admitting to using the controversial drug, but said she had ‘released my own shame’ about it.

Oprah, who has long been open about her struggles with her weight, recently stepped back from her role as a Weight Watchers ambassador to avoid a ‘perceived conflict of interest’ as she appears in TV documentary Shame, Blame And The Weight Loss Revolution.

In the documentary, she recalled how difficult it was for her to deal with the constant criticism about her weight from the public over the last 25 years.

She said in the show that hopes people can begin to ‘release the stigma and the shame and the judgement to stop shaming other people for being overweight or how they choose to lose or not lose weight.’

She said she ‘took on the shame’ over the 25 years ‘making fun of my weight was national sport,’ and would ‘never forget’ some of the cruel headlines and captions describing her as ‘bumpy, lumpy and downright dumpy’ and ‘fatter than ever.’

‘It is a very personal topic for me,’ said Oprah in a press statement quoted by BET. ‘And for the hundreds of millions of people impacted around the globe who have for years struggled with weight and obesity.’
