James May, Jeremy Clarkson, and Richard Hammond have come to the end of the road with The Grand Tour.

It’s the closing of an era for the trio and their fans, as they’ve been doing car-based shows together since 2003.

They started out on BBC show Top Gear, before moving across to Amazon Prime Video in 2016.

The final instalment of the fifth season will follow their adventures through Zimbabwe, and James, 61, has now revealed when it’s set to air.

‘I’m not allowed to tell you what date it’s coming out, so I won’t say that it’s September,’ he cheekily shared.

He then defiantly added: ‘I can say anything I want now, frankly.’

While speaking on BBC Sounds Today Podcast with hosts Nick Robinson and Amol Rajan, James spoke about how he’s feeling about the series coming to an end. He described filming his final voiceover on Wednesday as ‘sad’ and ‘remarkable’.

‘We’ve done it for nearly 22 years – a lot longer than we thought we would.

‘I thought, when I started doing it in 2003 or 2004, that this was a bit of a laugh. Maybe it’ll last a few years. And, here we are, grey and wizened and sagging. And we’ve only just stopped doing it. It’s quite remarkable,’ he reflected.

‘You have to be grateful for the opportunity and thankful that it happened, and accept – you know – I don’t want to be the person in the pub who used to be on the telly.’

Asked whether it’s likely he’ll reunite with Jeremy and Richard in future, he ruled out the subject matter they’ve become known for.

‘We’re not going to make another series together about cars, no,’ he stated.

However, he quickly added: ‘Well, hang on. You should never say no, should you? I think it is pretty unlikely.’

When asked if he has any projects in the work, he celebrated being in a position where he can just say yes only to programmes that bring ‘sheer joy’.

‘My greatest remaining ambition is to get to the end of my life without running over anybody. Because I’ve managed it so far and it would be deeply ironic and very unpopular if it happened now,’ he joked.

Nick concluded the interview by congratulating James on providing pleasure for millions of people.

‘It’s worth pointing out for balance, as this is the BBC, that quite a few people hate us as well,’ James jested in response.

James’ other Amazon series Oh Cook! is also reportedly coming to an end, due to his competence.

The whole concept of Oh Cook! was James receiving tuition as he was hopeless with an oven. However, he’s now become such a good chef, he’s released a cookbook so the idea no longer makes sense.

Luckily, he has a third show with the steamer – James May: Our Main in… In the travelogue, he’s already embraced local culture in Japan, Italy and India, and the world is quite literally his oyster with Amazon budget.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Amazon Prime Video for confirmation of The Grand Tour’s TX date.

The full interview with James May on The Today Podcast will be released on BBC Sounds and other podcast providers on Friday 14 June at 6am.

The Grand Tour is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
