Developer Deck Nine has released an extended look at Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, which features the return of original protagonist Max Caulfield.

After being revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase, developer Deck Nine has given a deep dive on the next Life Is Strange game.

Life Is Strange: Double Exposure sees the return of Max Caulfield, who was the teenage protagonist in the original Life Is Strange from 2015. The character is now an adult in this sequel, with original voice actor Hannah Telle reprising the role.

The original game concluded on a pivotal decision which decided the ending you’d have to the story, and now Deck Nine has detailed how this narrative choice, and others you made along the way, will impact the sequel.

As detailed in a reveal livestream, Life Is Strange: Double Exposure will ‘respect’ both endings, with the developers confirming neither outcome is the definitive ‘canon’ conclusion.

‘It was really important at Deck Nine that if we were going to make another Max adventure that the game would have to respect both those endings,’ game director Jonathan Stauder said. ‘Life is Strange: Double Exposure does that very thing.

‘There’s no canon ending in our book to the first game. Double Exposure will respect both endings in Max’s thoughts, her journal, her SMS, her interactions with other characters, what she opts to reveal about her past to her new friends, it’s all reflective of that final choice.’

As for how your choices will transfer over, the developers confirmed Max will have a conversation with new character Safi early on, where the events of Arcadia Bay ‘comes up naturally’ in conversation, with players able to change their final choice if they wish.

Elsewhere in the presentation, Deck Nine showed off 18 minutes of gameplay from the sequel, which essentially sets up the supernatural murder mystery as Safi, following some stargazing, is mysteriously found dead on a bench.

Life Is Strange: Double Exposure sees Max shift between two timelines as she attempts to solve the mystery, one where Safi is dead and the other where she is still alive. As such, along with trying to identify the murderer, you also have to prevent it from happening in the latter timeline.

This is Deck Nine’s third Life Is Strange game, following 2017’s Life Is Strange: Before The Storm and True Colors in 2021. The original Life Is Strange and its sequel were created by Don’t Nod, who also helmed Tell Me Why.

While this sequel looks and sounds promising, its development has come at a rough time for Deck Nine, with reports of mismanagement and significant layoffs at the studio.

Life Is Strange: Double Exposure launches on October 29 on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox, with a Switch version planned for a later date. If you pre-order the Ultimate Edition for an extra £25, you’ll get access to the first two chapters two weeks earlier.
