Azerbaijan GP: Vettel Explains Key to a “Good Result” for Aston Martin

After a brilliant performance in the Monaco Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel seems to have found his form again. Although he didn’t have any points heading to the Principality, the German finished P5 to secure his first points of the season. To make things better, fans voted him ‘Driver of the Day’ in Monaco.

Ahead of another street race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Vettel points out the key aspects of Baku and his expectations from this weekend.

Sebastian Vettel believes Baku poses a “different challenge” to Monaco

While the track in Azerbaijan is a street circuit like Monte Carlo, Seb believes that there is a difference in the way the two circuits test drivers.

The German said, “From Monaco, we travel to another street circuit, Baku – but it’s a very different challenge.

“You can overtake in Baku, and tyre degradation is much more of a factor, so, while Saturday remains important, finding a good balance for the technical sectors and the high-speed sections, while performing a strong race strategy, will be key to a good result.”

Besides the strategic aspects mentioned by the German, another factor that makes Baku challenging is its unpredictability. The race often plays host to crashes and multiple safety cars, which can cause major shuffles in race positions.

We want to maintain our momentum: Vettel

With both Vettel and Lance Stroll finishing in the points in Monaco, Aston Martin has jumped to fifth in the constructors’ championship. Despite taking 14 points from the Principality, they are still far off McLaren and Ferrari, who lead the midfield battle.

Vettel believes the team have newfound momentum now, which he hopes will carry forward to Baku. “We’re coming here off the back of a good weekend in Monaco, and we want to maintain our momentum,” he said.

Although he only has 10 points this season, Vettel’s track record in Baku is remarkable. Across the three editions so far, the German finished no lower than fourth here. Despite that stat, the former Ferrari driver seems far from maintaining that track record.

However, Baku is unpredictable. Should Aston Martin play their cards right, Vettel might stand a chance of breaking into the top five once again. Can the German pull off an upset on June 6?
