Ronnie Wood is making progress after his ‘worrying’ second battle with cancer during lockdown as it was ‘caught early’, his ex-wife Jo has said.

The Rolling Stones star was recently treated for small cell cancer, four years after he beat lung cancer in 2017 and underwent a five-hour operation to remove a tumour. He has since been given the all-clear.

Former model Jo, who was married to Ronnie from 1985 to 2011, has said that the star is recovering well.

She told The Sun: ‘I’m very proud of him. I think they caught it early as he has a history of cancer in his family.

‘It was very worrying, especially for the kids. But he’s much better. He’s going to be fine.’

The former couple share three children – Leah, 42, Tyrone, 37, and Jamie, 46 – and have remained close since their split.

The musician is now married to third wife Sally Humphries who welcomed their twin daughters Gracie and Alice in 2016. He is also dad to Jesse, 44, from his first marriage.

Speaking about his secret health battle in lockdown Ronnie, 74, said he is determined to ‘stay positive’.

‘I had small cell more recently that I fought in the last lockdown. Throughout my recovery, you have to let it go. What will be will be, it’s nothing to do with me,’ he shared with The Sun in April.

‘All I can do is stay positive in my attitude, be strong and fight it, and the rest is up to my higher power.’

The musician previously said his ‘life was hanging by a thread’ in 2017 ‘after 50 years of chain-smoking.’

He added: ‘The doctors were able to remove the tumour from my left lung, thank God the cancer had not spread.

‘Now my lungs are working like a young man who never smoked. I finally quit smoking four years ago. The Seventies were by far my wildest time.’

In 2019 he told Metro.co.uk about how he made sure to look after his health while on the road with The Rolling Stones, keeping his rider as nutritious as possible.

‘As long as I’ve got my espresso coffee machine and my nuts and pumpkin seeds I’m fine,’ Ronnie laughed.

On keeping an eye on his health he added: ‘It’s gotta be done. I have my health check up since I was lucky enough to have the cancer scare and beat it. Somebody up there likes me!’
