Many people have claimed that we’re living in the golden age of television and if that’s true, we have a lot to thank Netflix for.

The streaming giant has 269.6million subscribers globally, making it the largest in the world.

Not only has the service managed to make it’s way into our homes via our TVs, it’s also snuck its way into our cultural lexicon (Netflix and chill, anyone?).

But sometimes good things require patience, and that’s often the case withNetflix’s biggest hit shows, which make fans wait months or even years between season roll outs.

Now that we’re well into 2024, we’re beginning to get impatient for the release of the newest episodes of our favourite shows.

Here are all of the Netflix blockbuster shows we’re still waiting for in 2024.

Squid Game

Rarely has there been a TV show that has horrified and enthralled viewers as thoroughly as Squid Game.

The South Korean survival drama series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk is Netflix’s biggest hit to date – a massive feat for a non-English language show.

The dystopian drama is set in contemporary South Korea and follows Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), a down-on-his-luck chauffeur and gambler who receives a mysterious invitation to participate in a series of children’s games. He soon discovers that the seemingly innocent games come with a deadly twist, and what follows is an addicting psychological thriller.

Luckily, fans of the show don’t have to wait much longer for more episodes. Netlfix has confirmed that Season 2 of the show will premiere on December 26, 2024, with season 3 expected in 2025.

The Night Agent

The Night Agent is another hit thriller from the streaming giant, originally released in March 2023. Created by Shawn Ryan, the show is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk.

The story centers around Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso), a low-level FBI agent who works in the White House basement. One night a desperate call from Rose Larkin (played by Luciane Buchanan), a tech entrepreneur on the run, plunges Peter into a deadly conspiracy plot.

Netflix has confirmed that fans can expect a second series of the show sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.

Heartstopper

Season three of Heartstopper is expected to come out in October (Picture: Samuel Dore/Netflix)

Heartstopper has become a beloved LGBTQ+ cultural staple. The coming-of-age romance series, adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, is set in a British secondary school.

The story revolves around Charlie Spring (played by Joe Locke), a shy and openly gay teenager who finds himself entangled with Nick Nelson (played by Kit Connor), a popular rugby player.

With two seasons already out, fans can expect season three of the hit show in October 2024.

Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is a picturesque series that showcases the beauty of Paris (Picture:Netflix)

Emily in Paris is as beloved as it is ridiculed, with many rolling their eyes at the cotton candy story. But that hasn’t stopped it from being a major hit.

The series follows the adventures of Emily Cooper, a young, ambitious marketing executive from Chicago who unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris. Created by Darren Star, the show stars Lily Collins as the titular character, Emily, whose life is forever changed when she is sent to the French capital to provide an American perspective to a prestigious marketing firm.

The show makes for delightful and picturesque easy watching, and can be expected to return on August 15 with the second half of season four dropping a month later on September 15.

Wednesday

Wednesday was a major hit in 2022 (Picture: Netflix)

Another massive (and somewhat unexpected) hit for Netflix was the series Wednesday, a reimagining of the beloved character Wednesday Addams from the classic Addams Family.

Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Tim Burton serving as an executive producer and director for several episodes, the series stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, a sharp-witted and witchy teenager.

The spooky, touching, and often funny show was a sensation, becoming the second-most watched English-language Netflix series in the history of the platform just three weeks after its release.

Unfortunately, the hit first season (which came out in 2022) stands alone for now, with a second series expected in early 2025.

Lucifer

Another spooky hit, Lucifer is a captivating urban fantasy series on Netflix that follows the story of Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil, who grows bored of his throne in Hell and decides to retire to Los Angeles.

Lucifer initially finished its three-season run on Fox in May 2018 before Netflix picked it up later that year. The series continued on the streaming giant for three more seasons with the final season premiering on Netflix on September 10, 2021.

Created by Tom Kapinos and based on the DC Comics character from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman series, the show stars Tom Ellis as the charismatic and charming Lucifer Morningstar.

Ultimately, the show is more detective drama than spiritual analysis, with the main character joining forces with detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) to solve various crimes.

While Netflix has claimed that Lucifer is finally wrapped up for good, the show’s history of surprise renewals has sparked plenty of rumours that another series could be on its way.

All Of Us Are Dead

All Of Us Are Dead is another gripping South Korean hit for Netflix, this time with the added addition of zombies.

Based on the popular webtoon Now at Our School by Joo Dong-geun, the series is set in a school where a zombie apocalypse is unfolding with grisly speed.

The story centers on a group of students who find themselves trapped within the school as the virus spreads. The show was much loved by viewers and is a finely crafted masterclass in building suspense.

While it’s been confirmed that the series will return for a second season, it remains unknown when exactly the 2022 hit will be back.

Ginny & Georgia

Ginny & Georgia is a dramedy series on Netflix that delves into the intricate dynamics of a mother-daughter relationship set against the backdrop of a small New England town.

Created by Sarah Lampert, the show stars Antonia Gentry as Ginny Miller, a teenage girl navigating adolescence, and Brianne Howey as Georgia Miller, her difficult-to-understand mother.

The series was a major hit in 2021 when it first came out, and its second season made even bigger waves, holding the streaming platform’s number one series spot on Netflix’s Top 10 TV Shows in the US for two straight weeks in 2023.

Unfortunately, fans can’t expect season three until sometime in 2025.
