Andrew Scott’s turn as Tom Ripley may have blown critics away but one star of the 90s film The Talented Mr Ripley found it ‘hard’ to watch.
Matt Damon first starred as the titular con man in the 1999 film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel alongside Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, directed by Anthony Mingella before his death aged 54 in 2008.
The Talented Mr Ripley follows Tom who has been flown over to Italy to convince wealthy socialite Dickie Greenleaf to return to the US instead of galivanting around Europe with his girlfriend Marge.
Instead, Tom grows increasingly infatuated with Dicke and discovers he is surprisingly adept at deceit and murder.
Netflix released its black-and-white TV adaptation split across eight episodes in April 2024 to rave reviews and boasts an impressive 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Damon was asked if he would ever be tempted to reprise the role of Ripley given the revived interest.

He explained to IndieWire: ‘I don’t know. You know, I associate the one that we did so much with Anthony Minghella, who’s passed away now, that I don’t know.
‘I even had trouble watching the new one, as beautiful as it was and as great as everybody was.
‘It was hard at first for me to sink back into it just because I have so many great memories, but they’re all wrapped up in these personal feelings about the experience.’
Despite being hailed a ’masterpiece’ by audiences, Ripley failed to make a dent in Netflix’s streaming figures, setting an unwanted record for the worst opening for a limited series released on a Thursday.
Ripley is available to stream on Netflix now.
