The release date for Dragon Age: The Veilguard has leaked out ahead of the official reveal, and it’s not what you’d expect.
There are an unusually large number of high profile video games that still don’t have a specific release date yet, but which are supposed to be out this year. That’s worrying, because that often means a delay, which is exactly what’s happened with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 today.
So far, there’s no indication that Indiana Jones And The Great Circle will miss 2024, while the other big question mark is over BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard – which is due to officially confirm its launch date on Thursday at 5pm.
As so often happens though, someone has jumped the gun and a shortened version of the release date trailer has appeared online. Surprisingly though, the game is due to launch on October 31, i.e. Halloween.
Halloween is on a Thursday this year, which isn’t a common day for a new game to be released, so it does seem as if BioWare and EA are aiming for it specifically.
Why that might be is a mystery, as the series has never had much of a horror atmosphere and indeed the trailer earlier in the year was criticised by many fans for having too much of a comedic tone – with comparisons to Fortnite and Overwatch in terms of the art style.
BioWare later attempted to placate fans, assuring them that the tone and visuals would be more in line with the previous games, but that still doesn’t suggest anything that would make a Halloween release relevant.
In fact, not only has the game being accused of being too light in tone but the developers have confirmed that your characters can’t use blood magic, as that would make them too evil.
The leaked trailer shows customisation tools for protagonist Rook but the reveal this afternoon is expected to be longer. Next week, during Gamescom, a look at the game’s combat has been promised, as well as an overview of the PC version. The week after, the game’s companions will be in the spotlight.
Although it’s relatively rare for horror games to be released in October, this year has a surprisingly large batch.
Sony’s remake of Until Dawn is due on October 4, while the remake of Silent Hill 2 is scheduled for October 8 – alongside Diablo 4 expansion Vessel Of Hatred.
Movie tie-in A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is due on October 17 and first person shooter Shadows Of The Damned: Hella Remastered, from the creator of Resident Evil, is due on Halloween itself.
Dragon Age has at least picked a quiet week for new releases, with the only other major title being the decidedly non-horror focused (as far as anyone knows) Life is Strange: Double Exposure on October 29.
