Simon Cowell is known for being outspoken about his opinions on aspiring musicians and while it appears to have charmed some, others, including Sir Tom Jones, aren’t fans.

The 84-year-old Welsh musician shot to fame in the 1960s and was once described as a ‘musical shapeshifter’ after dabbling in pop, R&B, country, dance, soul, and gospel.

With over 100 million records sold and a more than 60-year career, Sir Tom has received plenty of praise during his time in the industry but has also experienced his fair share of criticism.

Choosing to make use of his invaluable experience in 2012, he signed on to become a coach on The Voice UK, joining will.i.amJessie J and Danny O’Donoghue and mentored Leanne Mitchell, who won the season.

After returning for a further three years before taking a brief break, he made his grand return in 2017 and now coaches in direct competition with Simon, 64, who was head judge on The X Factor and is still on Britain’s Got Talent

Speaking to MailOnline, ahead of the show’s 13th season of The Voice UK, the She’s A Lady singer has shared his thoughts on Simon’s coaching methods, stating he thinks the record executive can ‘take it too far’.

‘Well those kinds of talent shows take it too far. Simon Cowell has done that. You know, by saying, “Why are you on this show? What makes you think you can sing? Who told you you can sing”. I mean… Jesus,’ he said.

‘The difference between The Voice and other talent shows is, they can sing. The star added that they’ve got rid of those who can’t sing before the first auditions’.

Elsewhere in the interview, the much-loved musician revealed what fans can expect from the show’s new season, noting that they hadn’t found the next Taylor Swift.

‘No. Who could beat Taylor Swift? Nobody’s like her, she’s sensational,’ he said.

Sir Tom and Will.I.Am are the longest-running panelists on the hit show and appear to have no intentions of leaving the seat anytime soon.

Sitting down with the BBC’s The One Show last week, Sir Tom described his role as ‘the perfect job’.

‘I like listening to new voices and hopefully I can give some advice,’ he said.

‘So it’s the perfect job for me- well it’s not really a job- it’s something that I love to do. I still feel the same way now because this is the 13th series, so I still feel the same way now as I did when we started because you get new voices all the time, new people coming on.’

Instead, country singer LeAnn Rimes will join Sir Tom and will.I.Am, and in the first-ever coaching duo, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones from the band McFly will add a twist to the usual coaching format.

Sir Tom’s comments come after he reignited his feud with Humperdink, 88.

‘There is nothing friendly about me and Engelbert because he is a p***k and you can quote me on that. We fell out years ago,’ told The Sun on Sunday.

Jones revealed there was no chance that Humperdink and he will become friends anytime soon, adding that he has rejected Humperdink’s attempts to reconcile.

The Voice UK will premiere on ITV on August 31.
