The coming-of-age sitcom The Inbetweeners ran from 2008-2010 on the channel, before they moved on to two widely successful films, and there could be more life in the old dog!

The adventures of students William McKenzie (Simon Bird), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) and Jay Cartwright (James Buckley) provided many hilarious situations, with quotes long outliving their transmission, and fans could soon get some new catchphrases to endlessly quote at each other.

One of the leading stars of an iconic Channel 4 series has teased a possible comeback.

Joe, 40, is the person who has given hope that the gang could be getting back together for more ‘oh fwend’ and ‘I thought it was a fart sir’ style antics.

Ten years after the last film, which was set in Australia, the actor was asked if conversations had taken place.

While speaking on the Always Be Comedy podcast he responded: ‘Yes, it’s happened in various forms. All of us feel it would be nice to do.’

However, he added that there were fears it may not live up to the standard of its popular original run.

‘Everybody’s anxiety would be, “Will it be as good?”. That is what we would be going in with,’ he shared.

A few ideas have already been floated including a Las Vegas stag do, and as the men are now grown-up they would potentially meet at a five-a-side game rather than the college common room.

The cast would be more than happy to be in each other’s company again, as they have remained friends over the past decade.

‘We’re all still around, we’re all still in each other’s lives. We all still like each other and if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it,’ he said.

Joe continued: ‘I feel like we all still really like each other.

‘We’ve all been able to go away and get various monkeys off our backs, in terms of things that we felt we needed to do other than The Inbetweeners to prove something to ourselves.’

The programme, which also starred Emily Atack as Charlotte Hinchcliffe, is extra special for Joe as he met his wife Hannah Tointon on the series.

Hannah played his character’s girlfriend Tara, and romance then blossomed off-screen and the couple now have a child together.

While Joe has given hope to fans, James, 37, previously told Metro.co.uk he still finds the scenes just as funny as when they were first created.

‘It might be a bit more cringy or embarrassing than being the actor who’s so fed up with a character and too cool for school, but I still find it funny,’ he said.

James added: ‘I still find it as funny as when I first read it.’

The Inbetweeners set viewership records – the first episode of the third and final series was watched by 2.6m viewers – the highest ever viewing figure for a programme screened on E4, until it was beaten by Glee the following year. It won multiple accolades including British Comedy Awards and British Academy Television Awards.

The first movie which showed the characters on a lads’ holiday in Malia, earned £13.22m at the box office in the opening weekend.

The Inbetweeners is available to watch on Channel 4
