Concord isn’t a bad game, despite terrible sales numbers (YouTube)

First people made fun of Concord shutting down so soon after it launched, now they’re pointing fingers at game reviewers who gave the hero shooter a good score.

Just two weeks after its release Concord will be taken offline as Sony has decided to abandon its live service shooter because of low player numbers, which had already dipped below 100 on Steam.

The shutdown has caused turmoil on social media, where many are mocking its failure, calling it ‘PlayStation’s biggest blunder’ and hoping for the end of live service shooters altogether.

There are also those who point their finger at reviewers who gave the hero shooter a favourable score when it launched… which seems odd.

A number of prominent sites gave Concord a good, but not great, review, with many sitting between a six or seven out of 10.

IGN gave Concord a score of seven, and has been criticised for it in retrospect on Twitter, with Cédric Chassang saying:

‘So, by your standards any sub-7 game should be shut down and refunded, right? Got it.’

‘Didn’t ya’ll give this game a seven? Never heard of a game with that rating getting taken down less than a month after launch. Wukong got an eight, lmao,’ Dickie Galoot added.

Our review gave Concord a six, as it’s a competent shooter but one that’s wholly unoriginal and disappointingly generic in its presentation.

A review isn’t meant to predict a game’s financial success, however. There are many good video games that don’t do as well as they deserve, just as there are many bad ones that are extremely successful.

There are reports that Concord only sold 25,000 copies, but it didn’t fail because it was bad. It sold because it was very generic and, perhaps most importantly, because – unlike many other live service games – it is not free.

It’s not clear if Concord is ever coming back, after Sony shuts it down on Friday, September 6, but game director Ryan Ellis has said they will ‘explore options, including those that will better reach our players’.

Making it a free-to-play game like Overwatch 2 and Apex Legends, could work though as Concord’s gameplay isn’t the problem, in fact it’s gunplay is better thanmost.

What’s for certain though, is that right now nobody is interested in playing Concord as a paid-for game, except for those that are rushing to achieve platinum before it goes offline.
