Kay Burley has celebrated her return to Sky News after being suspended for six months due to breaching lockdown rules.

In December last year, Kay, 60, apologised after ‘inadvertently’ breaking Covid-19 restrictions while celebrating her 60th birthday, when London had been placed in tier two.

The TV presenter agreed to be taken off air for six months, writing in a statement: ‘I have today agreed with Sky News to step back from my broadcasting role for a period of reflection.’

Ahead of her return next week, Kay has shared an excited tweet, which features a photograph of her reclining on a sofa with her arms raised in the air in jubilation.

‘See you on Monday. Hope you’re as happy as I am to be back,’ she wrote alongside a smiling emoji.

Kay’s eponymous programme on Sky News has been on air since 2018, transitioning from the afternoon to the breakfast slot in 2019.

When Kay was found to have breached lockdown rules in the English capital, she wasn’t the only Sky employee caught out.

Correspondents Beth Rigby and Inzamam Rashid, who attended Kay’s birthday bash, also agreed to take three months off air at the time.

Kay expressed her regret over their involvement, referring to them in her apologetic statement by writing: ‘Some dear friends and colleagues – some of the most talented and committed professionals in our business – have been pulled into this episode and I regret this enormously.’

She added: ‘I very much look forward to being able to continue my 32-year career with Sky when I return.’

Kay recently mocked upcoming new channel GB News, responding to a Twitter user who wrote: ‘Roll on GB News’ by saying: ‘We plan to.’
