British actor Matt Smith has waved his luscious black locks goodbye as he debuted a colourful mohawk on the streets of New York.

The screenstar – known for his roles in Doctor Who, The Crown and House of the Dragon – has undergone a total transformation for his latest role, as he put a razor to his head and grabbed a packet of colourful hair dye.

The 41-year-old actor was spotted in Manhattan district of Soho, with a stylish pair of black sunglasses. Although he didn’t really need the pair of specs as his new hairdo was doing all the incognito heavy-lifting.

We wouldn’t be surprised if passers-by had to do a double-take as they processed Matt’s fresh hairdo – a daring look that he has never tried before.

It goes even further than that one time he shaved his floppy hair clean-off while shooting Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How To Catch A Monster.

This new, eye-catching, character appears in Darren Aronofsky’s film adaptation of the crime thriller, Caught Stealing. Matt joins a stacked cast including Zoe Kravitz as Yvonne and Austin Butler as lead character Hank Thompson.

The film follows ex-baseball player Hank who gets caught up in the underground crime scene of 1990s New York City as he fights to survive in this completely unexpected, and dangerous, underworld.

It is not clear yet exactly which role Matt is playing, but fans are already mourning his well-loved hairdo.

‘Whatever the role it is better be worth it because if i had to wake up with this haircut I would cry,’ @roasmundsike wrote.

‘Matt Smith’s hair, may you rest in peace. You were cherished and loved by all of us. Every strand was as precious as gold,’ @haf_art added.

‘His hair … no comment,’ @hnryfx added.

‘Trying to decide what amount of money would be worth doing this to my hair… I mean yeah it’s his job and he’s getting paid well but still… he actually had nice hair,’ @anyataylors wrote.

‘He looks HORRENDOUS oh my god,’ @cozyheard mourned.

‘Absolutely distraught over matt’s mohawk so im pretending it doesn’t exist…’ @whouffleking echoed.

Although some are digging the look, with @daemonsmatt writing: ‘Never thought a mohawk would be attractive but here we are he is eating it up…’

‘He looks cool, I love it,’ @merinasapcapfan added.

The Emmy-nominated star recently made headlines for an entirely different reason after expanding on his issue with trigger warnings.

The star, who has played complex and meaty characters such as the late Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Daemon Targaryen believes in telling ‘morally difficult’ stories.

‘It’s OK to feel uncomfortable or provoked while looking at a painting or watching a play, but I worry everything’s being dialled and dumbed down.

‘We’re telling audiences they’re going to be scared before they’ve watched something.’

He explained that ‘it’s a shame’ to do ‘too much policing of stories’ because of a certain climate, before adding: ‘I’m not sure I’m on board with trigger warnings.’

He echoed a similar sentiment earlier this year after agreeing with Ralph Fiennes’s stance on the matter, where he said they should be ‘scrapped’ for theatre audiences.
