An HBO boss has promised that Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon will blow fans away, teasing that the fantasy show is looking ‘spectacular’.

House of the Dragon, set 300 years prior to the start of Game of Thrones, is currently in production, with Matt Smith taking on the role of Daemon Targaryen and Emma D’Arcy portraying his niece, Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is vying to succeed her father on the Iron Throne.

While several Game of Thrones-related spin-offs are said to be in development, filming on House of the Dragon is in full swing, with several stars, including Matt, Emma and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, recently seen for the first time in full costume.

During a recent interview, Casey Bloys, content chief for HBO and HBO Max, spoke about the upcoming fiery prequel, explaining that it is ‘only’ spin-off ‘shooting’ at the moment.

Speaking to Variety, he said that ‘all the other ones are in various stages of development’.

‘People may think we have 10 series shooting at the moment. There’s one that will be on the air in 2022. We’ll see how the other scripts come along,’ he said.

As for how House of the Dragon is coming along, Casey appeared confident that it will delight fans of George RR Martin’s fictional world.

‘It looks spectacular,’ he remarked, adding that the cast that showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal ‘have put together looks good’.

As for David Benioff and DB Weiss, who created the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones, Casey said they ‘have been entirely hands off’, as ‘they’re off working at Netflix’.

Other stars set to appear in House of the Dragon include Paddy Considine as Viserys I Targaryen, the king of Westeros, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King and Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, a renowned seafarer otherwise known as the ‘The Sea Snake’.

Outlander star Graham McTavish was recently spotted on set, sparking rumours that he could be playing Harrold Westerling in the series, a member of the Kingsguard.

Reddit users spotted that Graham was seen wearing similar colours and boots to actor Fabien Frankel, who is playing Criston Cole, another member of the Kingsguard.

House of the Dragon will premiere on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in 2022.
