A reboot of an 80s drama series has proved to be a hit with a new generation of fans, scoring a seriously impressive 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Matlock has returned with Kathy Bates starring as Madeline ‘Matty’ Matlock, a lawyer who has come out of retirement and claimed to be an inexperienced, widowed, ex-lawyer in need of money.

However, the pilot episode revealed Matty is actually a wealthy woman with a husband, investigating the death of her daughter from an opioid overdose.

The series also stars Skye P Marshall, Jason Ritter, David Del Rio and Leah Lewis, and returns after the original mystery legal drama series, which saw Andy Griffith play criminal defense lawyer Ben Matlock for nine seasons between 1986 and 1995.

Fans have hailed the reboot, giving it a perfect a score on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Loved the twists and turns. Great acting, though that’s no surprise from Kathy Bates,’ fan Cooper S wrote on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Had no idea what to expect, it was above and beyond my expectations and her (Cathy Bates) performance was off the charts! Pilot episode ended with a very unexpected turn of events. Not one I could have ever predicted and I’m pretty good at predicting these types of shows! I can’t wait for future episodes,’ Bridgette P added.

Mary B said: ‘Best written show in a long time. I was excited to see it and was not disappointed. It was fantastic.’

‘Kathy Bates and the first instalment of the show Matlock was outstanding! I cannot wait until the next episode,’ Katherine J wrote.

This comes after Kathy, 76, mistakenly announced she’s ready to retire, after a career spanning five decades.

‘This is my last dance,’ Kathy told the New York Times, as the Titanic star revealed she was planning her exit before the script for Matlock came her way.

‘It becomes my life. Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life,’ she explained.

She later said she was ‘flattered’ at the outcry, insisting that Matlock would be her swan song only if it continues to run for almost a decade.

She told Entertainment Tonight: ‘We’ll see… as long as the swan sails for another eight years or so.’

She added: ‘I think it was kind of a misunderstanding, but I was very flattered that everybody upset… we’re having so much fun, the chemistry is so great.’

Misery actress Kathy has received various accolades over her dazzling career, including an Academy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards.

A preview of Matlock is available to watch on CBS in America, and will begin to air on Thursdays from October 10.
