After several failed attempts, Blizzard is said to be developing a new StarCraft action game spin-off from the producer of Far Cry 3.

Of all the gaming franchises in Blizzard’s arsenal, StarCraft is possibly the most neglected over the past decade.

The real-time strategy series debuted in 1998 and received a sequel in 2010. After various expansion packs, a remastered version of the original game was released in 2017, which was the last StarCraft-related project so far.

However, Blizzard has attempted to make a shooter spin-off on several occasions. The most famous case is StarCraft: Ghost, which was announced back in 2002 but never actually materialised, while another project codenamed Ares, described as ‘like Battlefield in the StarCraft universe’, was reportedly cancelled in 2019.

If the dream of a StarCraft shooter seemed all but dead, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has reignited hopes by claiming Blizzard is in development on a new shooter spin-off, only this time led by Far Cry veteran Dan Hay.

Speaking on IGN’s Unlocked podcast, to promote Schreier’s new book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, And Future Of Blizzard Entertainment, host Ryan McCaffrey brings up a segment in the book where Schreier claims Blizzard is ‘incubating’ a new StarCraft shooter.

Asked if this is a project that’s happening, Schreier replied: ‘If it’s not cancelled… this is Blizzard after all and their history with StarCraft shooters is not good. That is a project that as far as I know is in development, at least as of the time that I wrote this book.

‘They are working on a StarCraft shooter. StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard.’

Dan Hay is known for his work across the Far Cry franchise, serving as a producer on Far Cry 3 before going onto become an executive producer across its sequels, Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, and spin-offs like Blood Dragon and Primal.

He left Ubisoft in 2021 and joined Blizzard the following year, where he was initially leading development on a survival game based on a new IP. That project, however, was cancelled earlier this year amid a round of layoffs at the company.

It’s unclear how long this new StarCraft shooter has been in development for, but considering StarCraft: Ghost was stuck in development hell for years before it was officially cancelled, it’s probably best to approach this with some scepticism.

Schrier is an excellent source but, as he himself says, Blizzard cancel games so often it’s best to not take anything for granted until a game is actually released.

As for Blizzard’s next official project, the company is set to release the first expansion for Diablo 4, Vessel Of Hatred, on October 8.
