Love Island winners split 2 months after making history on ITV series-Josie Copson-Entertainment – Metro

Just two months after making history as the first Black couple to win Love Island, Mimii Ngulube and Josh Oyinsan have called time on their relationship.

Their love story was deemed the most swoony-worthy on the ITV dating series and led to them clinching the victory but it’s all over.

This leaves just two couples remaining from this year’s offering – fellow finalists Nicole Samuel and Ciaran Davies, as well as Jess Spencer and Ayo Odukoya. It truly is the Love Hunger Games at this point.

To announce the news that they would no longer be dating, Mimii, 24, chose a way that has become synonymous with reality stars’ breakups – on Instagram stories of course, where else?

Selecting a black background, perhaps to symbolise the mood of the statement, or because it was the most aesthetically pleasing when paired with white text, she wrote a short explanation.

‘Hi everyone, I know that a lot of you have been wondering about Josh and I and why we haven’t been making appearances,’ she began.

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed there has been a distinct lack of social media posts from the couple, and they’ve not been showing up to events together. Although, they did put on a loved-up display at the NTAs.

Mimii continued: ‘The truth is we have been trying to figure it out since leaving the villa, but unfortunately things aren’t going to work out between us right now.

‘I know it’s a big disappointment for a lot of you as it is for me too, your support for us hasn’t gone unnoticed and I will forever be grateful for it, you guys are the reason we made it to this point.’

‘God bless you all,’ the post, which expires after 24 hours, concluded.

Josh, 29, has thus far decided not to comment on the situation. At least, they both have the £50,000 cash prize to dry their tears on and can distract themselves with their new celebrity lifestyle.

Even though they weren’t able to make it work on the outside world, they will always be history-makers.

During the villa, Mimii and Josh’s connection was tested by Joey Essex, who let slip he was asked to complete a ‘secret mission’ – arranging a meeting between Mimi and former romantic interest, Ayo.

However, the ongoings only seemed to bring Mimii and Josh closer, and the public rooted for them even more. And so, nine years after the revived version of the reality show launched, they became the first Black couple in the UK to take the top spot.

Speaking about what that meant to her, Mimii said: ‘I’m so shocked about it. It’s nice. Hopefully it will set pace for more diverse representation. It’s overwhelming, but in the best possible way.’

‘I definitely feel proud. To be able to add a little bit to help balance the scales, if it means greater diverse representation, that is great. We are just happy to write history,’ Josh added.

Their win followed Kai Fagan and Sanam Harrinanan, who were the first couple of colour to win in 2023 and announced their engagement in April.

Love Island is available to watch on ITVX.
