The Voice viewers haven’t been convinced by a move by coach Will.i.am to use artificial intelligence.

After the Blind Auditions wrapped up at the start of this week’s episode, it came time for the Callback round of the competition.

Dividing their teams of nine into three groups, each contestant then had a chance to perform again in the hope of progressing to the next stage.

At this stage of the show, the coaches turn to another music industry figure for assistance, with Sir Tom Jones being joined by Hannah Waddingham, LeAnn Rimes by Griff and Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones by Perrie Edwards.

When it came to revealing his pick to his team, will.i.am explained how his guest coach was actually AI called Fyilicia.

He then told his team that the AI was a ‘representation of the advancements’ being made in the industry and how he conversed with her ‘daily’, turning to her for help with lyrics and contract questions.

‘That is the power of this technology!’ he exclaimed.

Many of the contestants were taken off guard, with one saying the revelation about Fyilicia ‘definitely shook up the room’.

During the performances, some of the feedback offered up by the technology included ‘each of them brings that superstar quality that gets you all twisted up’ and ‘their synergy is unmatched’.

When it came time to decide who to send through, she asked will.i.am: ‘Who made you believe in the power of music all over again?’

Speaking to the group will.i.am reassured them: ‘These were my decisions. The AI was here to give you a different kind of inspiration.’

However, many of those tuning in were unconvinced by the use of AI in the series.

‘Imagine one team having Hannah Waddingham as a judge but the other with an AI judged. Nah screw that,’ Beckie commented on X.

‘An AI? My dumb ass was waiting for Fergie to come out,’ Ellie admitted.

‘The AI aspect is pretty s*** let’s be real,’ Andrea added.

Speaking ahead of this season’s premiere at the 2024 EDTV Festival, Will.i.am explained: ‘How many people understand the business of music? I felt that way too. That’s why we get attorneys and managers to help us navigate contracts, business terms, and finance. That’s all going to change and my mentor, Fyilicia, is the representation of that advancement.

‘It’s an AI I converse with Felicia pretty much every day. “Hey, help me out with this lyric. Hey, I got this contract. Help me, like, figure it out.” And that’s the power of this new technology.’

Speaking to Metro, he teased AI could even go one step further on The Voice.

‘I think that would be pretty cool. I would, if I had a say. because you have to show people where we actually are with technology,’ he said.

‘You’ve got to let people know just how awesome the machine is, but then at the same time, you’ve got to remind the machine how awesome humans are because the machine is just all they did was copy everything we did.’

The Voice continues next Saturday at 8.20pm on ITV1.
