Noughties indie pop icons Tegan and Sara have revealed the extent of a terrifying catfish ordeal they suffered in the 2010s.
The Canadian duo, who formed in the 1990s, hit the big time in the late 2000s when their albums The Con and Sainthood were both certified Gold.
At the height of their fame in 2014, they were featured on Everything Is Awesome – the official song for the Lego Movie – alongside the likes of The Lonely Island.
But the pair, who are identical twin sisters, have lifted the lid on the dark side of fame, explaining just how far some fans went to get close to them – and just how often those fans went too far.
‘Right from day one, I understood that our band was having an effect on people and that people were finding a safe space in our audience,’ Tegan said.
Speaking to The Guardian, she continued: ‘That brought me a lot of joy. [But] We started to get people being physical. They would grab us or grope us.’

Then, in 2011, things took a terrifying turn when they learned that a complete stranger had been impersonating Tegan online, pretending to talk to fans of the band.
‘We didn’t even have the word catfishing then. It was so bewildering,’ adding that they only found out about the incidents because victims reached out to them on social media.
‘The first couple of victims that came forward, they weren’t just emailing with fake Tegan – [fake emails had been made] for my girlfriend, for my best friend, for my manager. It was just absurd.’

When asked where incidents like that coming from, they responded: ‘The more personal you are, the more connected people become. That’s supposed to be a positive thing, but it also makes them feel entitled. It gives them ownership.’
The incident has been explored in the new film made by the duo, titled Fanatical: The Catfishing Saga of Tegan and Sara, which was first debuted in September 2024.
To date, Tegan and Sara have scored one top 20 hit in the UK after their involvement with the Lego Movie soundtrack, and two top 40 albums (in 2013 and 2016 respectively).

Comments from the duo have come just a few weeks after popstar Chappell Roan called out her own fans for inappropriate behaviour whenever they bump into her in public.
The Good Luck, Babe singer said: ‘I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous, or a little famous. I don’t care that this kind of crazy behaviour comes along with the job. ‘
She continued: ‘That doesn’t make it okay, or normal, or that I want it or like it. I don’t [care] whatever you think you’re supposed to be entitled to when you see a celebrity.’
