Princess Diaries author sets record straight after ‘exasperating’ rumours for movie 3-Laura Harman and Tori Brazier-Entertainment – Metro

Author Meg Cabot has corrected some rampant speculation over the storyline for the now-confirmed Princess Diaries 3 movie.

The best-selling writer, who has penned multiple popular books about Genovian princess, Mia Thermopolis, reacted to original star Anne Hathaway announcing that she was back for a third film.

She previously starred in the first movie in 2001, playing a teenager who discovers that she’s heir to the throne of a small European state after her long-lost father dies, before returning for 2004’s sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

However, fans can’t help but speculate over who will be returning, what the new movie will cover and whether or not it will be different from the books.

‘It’s been really hard not to say anything about it these past few months (years, actually). I’m so glad my secret’s out in the open now!’ Cabot wrote in a new blog post on Monday night.

Turning to address some of the most frequently asked questions that she was ‘allowed to answer’ at this stage, Cabot took the opportunity to quash exasperating rumours that the film will be a prequel.

‘No. Not sure where anyone is getting this information, but it’s not true. Please do not trust all the news you read, especially on social media,’ the author wrote. ‘We are living in an age of rampant misinformation, and this applies to movie news as well.’

She also teased as much as she could when it came to the film’s planned storyline and if it followed that of any of the books.

‘In some ways yes, in other ways no. There are many differences between the books and the movies, but that doesn’t mean both aren’t fun in their own ways,’ she pointed out.

Cabot also confirmed that the team was planning for a theatrical release in cinemas and that the film would definitely actually ‘be good’.

‘This script, written by the immensely funny and talented Flora Greeson, is great, whether you love the book Princess Mia, the movie version, or both,’ she promised. It not only made me laugh, it filled me with a warm, happy feeling.’

However, Cabot did keep her cards close to her chest when it came to confirming who Mia’s love interest will be in the new movie – first love Michael, who she ends up with in the books, or enemies-to-lovers flame Nicholas Devereaux, who was written for the cinematic sequel and played by Chris Pine.

‘Sorry, you’ll have to wait and see,’ was all the author shared.

However, Pine, 44, is distressingly claiming that he hasn’t heard a thing about the new movie.

In an interview on Today with Hoda and Jenna, Chris Pine, 44, appeared to discuss his new children’s book.

While the actor was on the couch he was asked about the possibility that he might be returning to the beloved franchise, he revealed: ‘I don’t know anything.’

You don’t know anything? You have a major role in it,’ said Jenna.

Hoda then declared that he ‘is Princess Diaries’, to which he jokingly replied: ‘That’s very sweet. Call Disney. Call [Disney CEO] Bob Iger.’

Chris then explained that sadly no one has spoken to him just yet about the project: ‘The answer is honestly I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.’

The hosts then treated Pine to some tweets from fans who were desperate to see him reprise his role.

‘If they have to drag Chris Pine by his man bun & Boost Mobile flip phone to the set of Princess Diaries SO BE IT,’ declared one of the tweets from @Alamanecer read out by the presenters.

Chris laughed at the tweet, responding: ‘My man bun? My man bun is gone!’ He revealed he had to cut it off after his publicist said he looked like ‘Rachel from Friends’ with long hair.

Other fans are also insistent that Chris returns to the franchise, with some even dubbing it a ‘crime’ if he doesn’t appear.

‘Making a Princess Diaries 3 and not informing Chris Pine about it is such a hate crime to society,’ said @Mustbeloveerle.

‘There is literally nothing Chris Pine could be doing right now that matters more than Princess Diaries 3 I’m serious,’ added @Beezkneezs.

John Rhys-Davies, who played Pine’s scheming uncle in Princess Diaries 2 confirmed to Metro in 2023 that they ‘were doing [a third] one’ in the past, ahead of original director Garry Marshall’s death.

Meanwhile, Robert Schwartzman, who played Michael in the first movie, is known more today for being a musician and director; he fronts the band Rooney and has helmed movies including Dreamland, Lost Transmissions and The Good Half.

It’s unclear who else from the original cast might be set to return, but there’s also calls for Mia’s book boyfriend Michael (played by Robert Schwartzman, pictured R) (Picture: Ron Batzdorff/Brownhouse Prod/Botnp Inc/Kobal/Rex/Shutterstock)

On October 4, Hathaway, 41, confirmed that the rumours were true that The Princess Diaries 3 was in the works and she’d be reprising her role as Mia Thermopolis.

‘Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️‍🔥,’ read the caption of her post on social media.

It has been confirmed that Adele Lim, who wrote Crazy Rich Asians and directed Joy Ride, will be directing the film.

Speaking to Deadline, Lim said: ‘As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.

‘We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.’

Julie Andrews has previously said that she wouldn’t know how her character, Queen Clarice, might fit into a sequel.

‘I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,’ Julie told Access Hollywood in 2023.

‘It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run.’

But nothing has been confirmed yet – so fans can still keep their fingers crossed to see the icon return to one of her most beloved roles.
