Gardeners’ World star Adam Frost has opened up about being diagnosed with a health condition after experiencing ‘throbbing’ pain in his body two decades ago.

The 55-year-old said he was sent from ‘pillar to post’ as doctors struggled to find the cause of his ‘very odd’ pain but was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body and other symptoms including fatigue, muscle stiffness and increased sensitivity to pain, according to the NHS.

The health body said the exact cause of the condition is unknown but it’s thought to be related to abnormal levels of certain chemicals in the brain and changes in the way the central nervous system processes pain messages carried around the body.

The BBC presenter revealed he had been living with fibromyalgia for the first time on Morning Live in segment to raise awareness of the condition which affects an estimated 2.5 million people.

He said: ‘For most of my life, I’ve considered myself pretty fit and healthy, regularly playing sports and, of course, spending lots of time in the garden.

‘But around 20 years ago, I started to experience some unusual symptoms. I started to experience these very odd pains.

‘They started in my neck, back, and shoulders, like this throbbing, and that then just moved through the rest of my body.’

Adam continued: ‘For almost two years, I was sent from pillar to post as doctors struggled to identify what was causing me to be so unwell.

‘Finally, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It was a huge relief for about five minutes and then it was another twelve months of going on this journey of understanding to eventually getting some sort of treatment.

In the show, Adam met with a woman called Helen Keane who also suffers from fibromyalgia, as well as Dr Katie Herring, who specialises in pain management.

Concluding the show, Adam said: ‘Today has invoked an awful lot of emotion inside of me and I know there’s a lot of classic symptoms with fibromyalgia, but you do get the sense that everybody’s experience is slightly different.

‘But to think the research that is being done and we could be getting closer to a cure for me. That is absolutely amazing.’

In 2017, Lady Gaga revealed she was also living with the condition and postponed her European tour dates to receive treatment in hospital for the severe ‘physical pain’.

Her Netflix documentary Five Foot Two showed more of the Born This Way singer’s struggles with fibromyalgia, including a bleak scene where she was jabbed with needles as doctors attempted to figure out the cause of the pain.

Other celebrities who have been diagnosed with the condition include Morgan Freeman, Lena Dunham and Real Housewives star Kyle Richards.

Morning Live airs weekdays on BBC One and Player from 9.30am.
