A guest on Saturday Kitchen has hit back at accusations that her outfit on the show was ‘inappropriate’, calling out the people who have tried to disparage her.

On Saturday morning, Kate Carter-Larg and Sam Larg, owners of the Scottish seaside cafe Cheesy Toast Shack, appeared on the BBC series alongside broadcasting legend Sir Trevor McDonald and other guests.

During the episode, Kate and Sam took part in a toastie-making demonstration, with the former explaining that the ideal toastie can be made with whatever bread one prefers, including a sourdough or white bloomer.

However, some people watching the programme were preoccupied with Kate’s outfit, with several making extremely judgemental remarks about the sleeveless top that she was wearing for her live TV appearance.

One X user called @KarenCollopy criticised what they described as an ‘inappropriate dress code’, while other people rudely said that it looked as though her top was going to fall down (despite this not being the case).

Another user named @LadyAnnabella17 claimed that ‘no one is listening to what they have to say’, adding: ‘Someone hand her an apron!’

Others made offensive comments saying that it looked as though Kate had come to the BBC set from a ‘night out’ – despite her simply wearing a brown top with a pair of jeans.

In response, Kate – whose toastie business raises money every month for Alzheimer’s UK – called out the strong reactions that viewers had to her outfit.

‘If you know me in real life or look at our social media page, I literally wear a strapless top all the time as I live by the beach,’ she told the Daily Star.

‘It’s not like I wore a thong and nipple tassels – but that’s how everyone is reacting. I thought I was going on TV to show off our toasties – I didn’t even think about my arms being on show!’

‘Who do they think they are commenting on what a woman should wear? It’s not the 1950s, it’s 2024″‘ Kate said (Picture: BBC/Saturday Kitchen Live)

Kate told the publication that the comments that she’s received ‘have been awful’, adding that ‘you just can’t win’.

‘People were picking holes in me for touching and adjusting my top, I didn’t even realise I was doing it but people were like “She just needs to have bigger boobs”. Seriously, who do they think they are commenting on what a woman should wear? It’s not the 1950s, it’s 2024!’ she stated.

Kate added that she can handle the remarks because she has a ‘thick skin’, has the support of her friends and family and is ‘genuinely happy’ – but other people who are on the receiving end of such judgemental commentary might not be able to cope.

In addition to Kate, Sam and Sir Trevor, the other people who appeared on Saturday Kitchen this weekend were chefs Julien Lin and Gennaro Contaldo.

Helen McGinn was on hand to deliver her top wine picks, as they all joined presenter Matt Tebbutt for the programme.

Saturday Kitchen returns on Saturday at 10am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
