Film fans have a lot to get excited about as we officially have a new instalment of the Scary Movie franchise on the way.

The hit series, mainly spoofing horror movies, first hit the big screen in 2000 and became an instant hit after parodying teen slashers including Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Keenen Ivory Wayans directed the original, as well as 2001’s Scary Movie 2, while Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans wrote and starred in the first two movies.

Marlon confirmed their involvement in the sixth instalment earlier today, sharing a picture of him posing in front of a parody of Ghostface.

He penned: ‘WE’RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise!

‘We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.’

According to Deadline, the untitled film will begin shooting next year with the Wayans brothers and Rick Alvarez writing and producing the sequel.

The cast has not yet been confirmed, with all eyes on whether Anna Faris and Regina Hall – who played Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks in the first four films – will reprise their roles.

Fans couldn’t get enough of the news and flocked to social media to share their excitement.

Reddit user FunctionBuilt cheered: ‘It’s been too long for them not to nail this. I bet you’d have tons of writers begging to write for a 2000’s era spoof comedy.’

CosmicOutfield agreed: ‘Best movie news I’ve heard all week! I’d love to see theme come back and make parodies of major horror films of the past 15 years.’

Top_Report_4895 said: ‘I want them to parody the A24 and Neon horror movies. It’s a lot of fertile ground there to be approached. Oh f**k, and also the legacy sequels.’

‘Honestly, take a huge step back and do this right,’ ThePheebs penned. ‘You have an entire f**king generation queued up and ready for this.

‘But it definitely feels like the window is very narrow to get this right. Everyone’s just so f**king tired.’

As Urgasmic added: ‘F**k it, id like to see it. They’ve got years of new material to satirize [sic].’

The first Scary Movie hit the big screen in 2000 and focused on a group of teenagers accidentally hitting a man with their car and dumping his body in a lake, but they are stalked by a killer in a Ghostface mask the following year.

It became an instant hit and raked in more than $270million at the global box office, with Scary Movie 2 released the following year.

The latest offering, Scary Movie 5, premiered in 2013 and was the only one not to feature Anna and Regina – it was the least successful instalment, with a critics Rotten Tomatoes score of just 4%.

Teasing the upcoming follow-up, Marlon, Shawn and Keenen told Deadline: ‘We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again.

‘This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again.

‘We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.’

Miramax Boss Jonathan Glickman added: ‘We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise.

‘The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.’
