Amazon’s TV adaptation of Mass Effect is finally getting off the ground, as EA celebrates a quieter N7 day due to Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Hollywood has been kicking around the idea of adapting Mass Effect for years, with early whispers of a movie stemming way back to May 2010 – only a few years after the first game was released.
While a film never materialised, those rumours morphed into rumbles of a TV series in 2021, with reports that Amazon were ‘nearing a deal’ to adapt BioWare’s sci-fi role-playing games.
Three years later, and that deal has seemingly been kicked through the door, with Amazon now officially working on a live action TV show.
According to Variety, Amazon has been emboldened by the success of Fallout earlier this year, with good reason, but an accurate Mass Effect show would be extremely expensive to make.
There is reason for caution though, considering the writer attached.
Who is the Mass Effect TV show writer?
According to the report, Daniel Casey, who is best known for writing Fast & Furious 9, is set to write and executive produce the adaptation.
Karim Zreik (Daredevil, Jessica Jones), Ari Arad (Uncharted, Spider-Verse), and EA’s Michael Gamble will also serve as executive producers.
When you think about the rich lore of Mass Effect, it doesn’t quite align with Fast & Furious, but Casey does have some sci-fi projects to his name. He is credited for rewrites on the pretty great 10 Cloverfield Lane and was responsible for 2018 sci-fi action film Kin, which was a critical and commercial failure, so it’s a mixed bag.
While there’s no other details about the series, The Witcher star Henry Cavill was previously pictured with a script seemingly related to Mass Effect back in 2021. It’s unclear though if he would still be involved, as he’s now attached to Amazon’s Warhammer series.
Since the first Mass Effect game in 2007, the series has spawned novels, comics, and an animated film. There have been four games in total, with the last being 2017’s much maligned Mass Effect: Andromeda. A fifth untitled game is currently in development.
While EA didn’t acknowledge the reports of a Mass Effect TV series as part of its annual N7 Day celebrations on November 7, it did roll out some special armour in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which is now available from a chest in the Lighthouse.
In a post about N7 day, EA wrote: ‘This year is a little different, as we just launched Dragon Age: The Veilguard as a studio; so we’re purposefully keeping things lighter as we celebrate the launch of the game.’
While we’ll have to wait and see if a Mass Effect TV series can live up to the original trilogy, a former lead writer at BioWare has previously explained why the thinks it might be a ‘cringe’ endeavour.
