As it debuts on Prime, Aubrey Plaza’s new movie My Old Ass has shot up the charts with fans reacting to the ‘incredible’ coming-of-age tale.

The film festival favourite has finally landed on streaming after months of anticipation and it has not disappointed.

The Megan Park-directed sci-fi comedy follows 18-year-old Elliot (Nashville star Maisy Stella) whose mushroom trip becomes a spiritually enlightening experience when she comes face to face with her 39-year-old self (played by Aubrey Plaza).

The hard truths and ominous warnings soon have Elliot reconsidering everything she knows about herself and the future she envisioned as she prepares to leave her childhood home behind and embark on the great unknown.

The movie has already enjoyed its fair share of critical acclaim, securing 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from a total of 179 reviews.

‘It takes all of Plaza’s weird chanting inflections and Stella’s exuberantly twitchy enthusiasm to make it pay off — but it does, with sly charm,’ Financial Times wrote in its four-star review.

‘It’s a fun, silly premise, but while there’s no shortage of stoner humour, the film is deeper and considerably more satisfying than the drug-baked adolescent wisecracking might initially suggest,’ Observer similarly echoed.

The certifiable hit has already made a splash on Prime after peaking at number one hit on the platform, per Variety.

In the UK this week the movie also firmly climbed its way through the ranks, with the latest data placing it at number two, just behind Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of The End.

And fans have made their feelings about the heartfelt, and thought-provoking, movie clear – although many weren’t expecting the advertised comedy to be quite so tearjerking.

‘I am in shambles. I haven’t ugly cried like that during a movie in a long time.. Be warned if you’ve ever lost someone!! Beautiful, incredible movie,’ @okkaitlyn wrote on X.

‘I didn’t expect to cry with My Old Ass but I have to be honest the scene with the hug with Chad just destroyed me… Such a beautiful film,’ @blackwidow_221b added.

‘Just finished watching My Old Ass. Sat down to watch what I thought was going to be just a fun, comedic film ( I went in blind).

‘Let me tell you, I am crying as I write this. There was one particular scene that just wrecked me.It was a good, solid film,’ @ItsMtnTime shared.

Its unexpected brilliance has secured it a top spot in the Prime Video charts (Picture: Amazon/Everett/Shutterstock)

‘I’m ngl I went into My Old Ass thinking “oh a female-led raunchy drug comedy with maybe some life lessons” I was wrong. Don’t get me wrong there are drugs and it’s very funny but didn’t expect for this movie to hit me so hard in my feelings,’ @meyshaplays agreed.

‘I was NOT expecting to react this way to My Old Ass,’ @goodpussyedna posted.

‘Blown away by the acting in this movie. Definitely an “a star is born” moment for Maisy Stella. Had me feeling homesick and heartbroken in the best way. I never knew where the story was going. Could’ve easily kept watching this story unfold for a few more hours,’ @_rocketnumber9 declared.

And the filming process proved itself ‘cathartic’ for The White Lotus star, as she told Elle.

‘I really did feel like I was talking to my younger self. It’s a therapeutic, cathartic thing to do. I’ve done it in therapy sessions… It’s something that I actually know about a little bit.

‘Knowing that and infusing that into the movie, there’s a lot of history and weight there that I feel like I just naturally had because that’s what happens when you really visualize your younger self. It’s pretty heavy.’

My Old Ass is now streaming on Prime.
