Fans of a sports drama TV series have slammed plans for a reboot.

Based on the 1990 novel of the same name by H.G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights was first adapted into a 2004 movie before being turned into a TV series.

Running for five seasons between 2006 and 2011 it followed a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillon, a small, close-knit community in rural West Texas.

It starred Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton as high school football coach Eric Taylor and his wife Tami Taylor, a school faculty member.

Other cast members included Taylor Kitsch, Jesse Plemons, Minka Kelly and Michael B. Jordan.

Although the series never picked up a huge following, it was critically acclaimed and was awarded a Peabody, Humanitas Prize and a Television Critics Association Award.

Then this week, Deadline reported the series is set to be rebooted.

‘A new iteration of the football drama is in the works at Universal Television with Jason Katims, Pete Berg and Brian Grazer,’ the publication shared.

The series is believed to be a new story, still set in the world of high school football, but with a whole new cast.

‘The project is in the early stages but has been taken out to market,’ the publication added.

However, many fans of the original are less than impressed.

‘NO. Leave it be. The original series is a damn-near masterpiece,’ P King shared.

‘Imagine how tired we are leave us alone and come up with original ideas instead of rebooting perfect shows and ruining them,’ Kara posted on X.

‘THIS IS A NIGHTMARE. YOU CANNOT RECREATE THIS MAGIC,’ Kenzie added.

Many others questioned why a new, original show couldn’t be conceived and greenlit instead.

However some suggested they were ready to give the reboot a chance (Picture: X)

The original was praised by fans, many who held it in high regard.

‘The best TV show ever to have graced the small screen. Poignant, gripping, dramatic and superbly acted, never one to be missed,’ one posted on Rotten Tomatoes.

In 2019 Kyle had ruled out ever having a Friday Night Lights reunion because Connie wasn’t keen.

Speaking to Metro, he joked about his former co-star as he ruled out a reboot and said: ‘Nah, nah – it’s Connie Britton. Connie Britton, she’s pretty miserable. She’s hard to work with and she’s just…They’d have me call her up and she’d be like “eurgh, no!” and she hangs up,’ he joked.

But, turning serious, he added: ‘No, really. No she won’t do it.

Friday Night Lights is streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV Plus.
