Controversial Netflix shark thriller dubbed ‘stupid’ by viewers has sequel confirmed-Pierra Willix-Entertainment – Metro

A Netflix action-horror disaster movie that some labelled ‘the next Jaws’ is getting a sequel.

Released earlier this year, the French film Under Paris starred Bérénice Bejo as a grieving marine biologist forced to face her tragic past in order to save the French capital from a bloodbath when a giant shark called Lilith appears in the Seine.

However, her efforts were ultimately futile, with the ending showing Paris flooded and sharks now spread out across the city.

Viewers had very mixed opinions of the film, with some saying it was ‘thrilling’ and others calling it ‘one of the best shark movies ever’.

Even Stephen King also admitted he was a fan, saying he ‘thought it would be a jokey movie like Sharnado’, but that it was actually ‘really quite good’.

However, others were less glowing, labelling it ‘stupid’, ‘predictable’ and ‘boring’.

Despite the backlash, which also included a claim of plagiarism, Under Paris became the best launch for a non-English language film on the streaming service with 102.3 million views.

In the months after its release, fans have been wondering if another movie might be on its way, especially after the end credits suggested Lilith and her offspring had spread to the rivers in major cities like London, New York, Bangkok, Venice and Tokyo.

It’s now been confirmed a sequel is in development, headed by the original’s director Xavier Gens (Lupin).

Variety has also reported the cast members who managed to avoid being mauled to death by the sharks will also return – Bérénice and Nassim Lyes, who played police officer Adil.

In a recent interview with La Tribune, the lead actress also said the sequel will start filming in September 2025, however Variety has said as the project is still in development and shooting could instead start as late as 2026.

When discovering the news, viewers were again divided.

‘God please no,’ intenus quipped.

Earlier this year Gens told Variety that if a sequel was made, it would ‘take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged under water’.

He also said that he initially struggled to get financial backing for the film, but Netflix eventually gave it a chance.

‘People in France didn’t dare touch it because folks assumed that shark movies could only be made by Americans or Koreans,’ he said.

Under Paris is streaming on Netflix.
