It’s safe to say 2024 has been another healthy year for cinemas after the Covid-19 pandemic, and movie fans have figured out why.

Last year produced the Barbenheimer phenomenon, a $1billion-grossing Super Mario film, and brought to an end the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

This year has seen huge success for animated films with Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4, while a Marvel resurgence came thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine.

And with December approaching, moviegoers on social media have spotted that all 10 of the highest-grossing films of 2024 are sequels.

But that could all be about to change thanks to Wicked’s incredible debut at the international box office, with its opening weekend already making its budget back.

Against a budget of £120million, Wicked has already earned back £130million, with the rest of its opening week still to go.

Critical reactions have also been positive, with the film currently certified fresh at 90% with a solid average review score of 7.9 out of 10.

It only needs to make another £200m across its run in worldwide cinemas for it to creep inside of the top 10 worldwide for the entire year of 2024.

When that happens, Wicked will be the first non-sequel film in the entire top 10 for 2024. Every other film is either the second, third, or even fourth film in their sagas.

So far, Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Despicable Me 4 lead the way, with Dune Part Two and Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire completing the top five.

Kung Fu Panda 4, Venom sequel The Last Dance, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice takes sixth, seventh, and eighth place, while Ride or Die (the fourth Bad Boys film) is ninth.

Finishing the top 10 is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which will be knocked out when Wicked enters the top 10 before the end of the year.

To find a film that isn’t a sequel, a reboot, or an adaptation, you have to go down to 20th placed If, starring Ryan Reynolds – that grossed £150m worldwide.

According to GamesRadar, you’d have to go back at least 50 years to find another year where the entire top 10 was made up of sequel films.

And even then, that’s only because data from before 1974 isn’t entirely accurate. Previous highs for major sequels were in 2015 and 2022.

The first time that more than five sequels were featured in the year’s top 10 was 2003, when the Lord of the Rings, Matrix, and Terminator franchises all got major sequels.

Since then, the numbers have only climbed, with more and more sequels driving people back to cinemas in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, things haven’t gone well for all sequels this year, with Joker: Folie á Deux and Mad Max Furiosa both underperforming at the box office.
