Strictly contestant Pete Wicks has shared that he feels ‘humbled’ by the public’s support as he made a vow to fans after making it through to the show’s semi-final.

The former Towie star may have come bottom of the leaderboard, but that didn’t stop him from storming through to the final five on Strictly Come Dancing thanks to a wave of votes.

As with other weeks, the 38-year-old looked absolutely stunned when his and professional partner Jowita Przystał’s names were called out by presenter Tess Daly, confirming they were safely through.

He held back tears as Jowita leapt into his arms in excitement before extending a heartfelt thanks to the voting public, who saw that it was Montell Douglas and Johannes Radebe sent home after a shock dance-off against competition favourites Tasha Ghouri and Aljaž Škorjanec on Sunday night.

‘I am speechless every week, especially this week, because I’ve tried my best throughout this. I’m just a bloke that’s trying to learn stuff. The fact that I get to take Jowita to a semi-final means so much to me, because she deserves it, she deserves everything,’ he told co-host Claudia Winkleman.

The couple scored 26 for their Waltz to Somewhere from West Side Story for Musicals Week, with Pete going off on the wrong foot at one point, making a glaring error, for which he was marked down.

Alluding to this, he added: ‘I just didn’t want to let her down tonight by messing it up and I’m so pleased that I get an opportunity to put it right.’

He then joked that he felt maybe fans were ‘potentially playing a cruel joke on me’ for advancing him so far in the dance competition, especially with the daunting challenge of two dances next week, but also insisted: ‘I couldn’t be more thankful, I’m so humbled by it, honestly.’

Taking to Instagram after the elimination was broadcast on Sunday night, Pete admitted he was ‘struggling to think of what to say and it’s not often I’m lost for words’.

‘I am so overwhelmed and blessed to have had your support over the past three months, I never expected it, and I have never taken it for granted. The belief you guys have had in me has been incredible and at times I’m not sure I’ve deserved it,’ he wrote with honesty next to a black and white picture of him supporting Jowita as he leant back in a moment from their Waltz.

He continued: ‘I’ve said it before, but no amount of words will ever be able to repay what you have given me. People talk about the “journey” and let me tell you, this isn’t my journey at all. It’s our journey. Jowita, you and I have all been on this wild ride and I wouldn’t have it any other way!’

Making a vow, he concluded: ‘I literally have no idea how I’m gonna get through next week but I can guarantee you I’ll be giving it my all. Thank you 🖤’

Jowita, 30, sweetly added her support in the comment section, responding: ‘You deserve it all Pete 🤍And together we will create two beautiful dances this week 🤍’

Close friend Zara McDermott – who took part in Strictly last series – was also emotional after his success, writing: ‘You deserve this. You’ve never danced a day in your life before this (couldn’t even clap to the beat😂). To come out each week, with a new routine, a new character to adopt, a new story to tell… in front of an audience of 8 million… that takes guts and courage.’

She called his improvement every week ‘beautiful to watch’ and added that his ‘gratitude for being there is why we all love you so much’.

‘I cried when I saw your reaction to getting through tonight,’ the TV star added.

Despite being the bookies’ favourite to exit the contest this weekend, stats pointed to his safety thanks to the style of his dance.

Research from SlotsCalendar uncovered that only one of the last 71 eliminations, dating all the way back to 2018, have been when celebrities have performed a Waltz, as he and Jowita did.

Next week they will tackle two full dance routines for the first time, having dabbled with a second courtesy of the Samba-Thon last Saturday.

Pete joked on the show that his tears had been provoked by fear over having to tackle two dances.

‘That’s another thing to cry about,’ he told Claudia.

Strictly Come Dancing returns live on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday December 7 at 6.30pm, while the results show will air on Sunday December 8 at 7.20pm.
