A psychological thriller starring Happy Valley’s James Norton that follows two children switched at birth will hit screens in the New Year.

Based on the best-selling novel by British author JP Delaney, Playing Nice tracks the aftermath of what would be most parents’ worst nightmare.

Set in Cornwall, the six-part series starts with two couples discovering their toddlers were switched at birth in a shocking hospital mistake.

They then face an unthinkable dilemma when asked if they want to keep the boys they’ve raised or be instead be given back their biological child.

The first couple are Pete (James) and Maddie (Malpractice’s Niamh Algar), while the other are Miles (James McArdle, Mare of Easttown) and Lucy (Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay).

Although it appears at first that all four agree on a solution, hidden motives quickly emerge and their trust of each other comes into question.

With Pete and Maddie then stretched to breaking point, it becomes clear they will do whatever it takes to keep their family together.

The trailer for the series was released this week and offers a first look at the rollercoaster ahead for viewers.

It begins with Pete and Maddy at the seaside with their son Theo, running into the waves together before a voice-over is heard telling them he is not their biological child.

The other couple are then shown with the son they took home before Miles turns up at Pete and Maddie’s home to introduce himself.

Although both couples originally agree to keep their children, things appear to take a dark turn when Miles is seen watching the boys on a CCTV camera in his home and Maddie declares the other couple ‘want both boys’.

They are then shown in court, with Maddie declaring the other two are ‘twisting everything’ before Pete pushes Miles into a car door during an argument.

Something bad then seems to befall Theo, with Pete seen screaming his son’s name.

‘Great cast looking forward to this,’ Tracy commented on Instagram.

‘Looks absolutely BRILLIANT! Can’t wait to see it,’ Patricia shared.

‘Can’t wait to see it ❤️’ Leanne added.

The series has been adapted by Malpractice writer Grace Ofori-Attah, with Kate Hewitt (One Day) directing all episodes.

After starring as Tommy Lee Royce across three seasons of Happy Valley, James has most recently starred in the Netflix film Joy, which tells the story of the team behind the development of the first ‘test tube baby’.

He is currently filming Peaky Blinder creator Steven Knight’s upcoming Netflix series House of Guinness, about the family behind the famous brewing company in 19th century Ireland and New York.

Playing Nice is coming soon to ITV.
