Netflix’s propulsive thriller Black Doves nearly had a different ending – but it was scrapped at the last minute for being too confusing.
The eight-parter stars Keira Knightley as spy Helen who is out for blood to avenge her lover MI5 agent Jason’s (Andrew Koji) gruesome murder.
She is joined by best friend and hitman Sam (Ben Whishaw) as she defies the boss Reed’s (Sarah Lancashire) orders in her quest for retribution.
As Helen begins to unravel the puzzle, it takes her to the heart of Westminster when it becomes clear Jason’s killing is linked to the murder of the Chinese ambassador Chen (Andy Cheung).
But while it is later revealed a member of the fearsome London crime family The Clarks was responsible for slaying Chen, Black Doves creator Joe Barton told Metro it was originally a different culprit.

They had even filmed scenes showing that it was bent MI5 agent Perryman (Adam Best) who had executed the Chinese ambassador after being knocked over by Trent Clark (Angus Cooper)on the instructions of Reed.
However, Giri/Haji showrunner Joe, 39, said he decided to change the identity of the murderer and re-shoot the scenes because it was becoming ‘too convoluted’.
‘We just took that one extra layer out because it was a lot,’ he explained.

With Sam and fellow assassin Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) being held hostage by London crime family The Clarks and the clock ticking on their inevitable deaths, Helen has to act fast.
She manages to lure the family’s youngest son and golden child Trent into her clutches and uses him to make contact with his mum Alex (Tracey Ullman), who rarely emerges from the shadows.
They all meet at a warehouse to carry out the exchange of Trent and a USB stick containing the footage of Ambassador Chen’s murder for Sam and Williams.
The footage – damning for The Clark family – reveals Trent accidentally killed the Ambassador, the father of his girlfriend Kai-Ming (Isabella Wei), after shoving him during an argument.
The heated row erupted when the Ambassador warned Trent to end his romance with Kai-Ming (Isabella Wei) for giving her an endless supply of class-A drugs.
Helen won’t rest until she’s avenged Jason’s murder (Picture: Netflix)
But while it appears both sides got what they wanted- Helen, the lives of her friends and Alex, the evidence that proved her son was a murderer – Helen still wants to avenge Jason’s death.
Jason had been murdered along with a tabloid reporter Phillip (Thomas Coombes) and jeweller Maggie (Hannah Khalique-Brown) as they were all aware of the existence of the footage and trying to bring it to the public’s attention.
In a shocking twist, it emerges that the seemingly hapless Trent ordered the hits on the trio in a desperate bid to ‘cover up his mess’, which results in a shootout.
Helen and Sam kill Alex and the rest of The Clarks’ muscle before Sam shoots Trent in the head on behalf of his best friend Helen to protect her from the future wrath of the clan.
Back in possession of the USB, Helen later hands it over to the CIA agent (Finn Bennett), who had been framed by the Chinese government as the ambassador’s murderer as a pretext for soliciting weapons of mass destruction from the UK, to prove his innocence and save the world from the threat of war.
Black Doves is available to stream on Netflix.
