Netflix viewers have been left in tears watching a series about a racing car driver who died while competing.

The Brazilian series Senna is based on the life of racing driver Ayrton Senna and stars Gabriel Leone in the title role.

It follows the sportsman from the beginning of his racing career in karting to his death aged 34 at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

With a budget of $170 million, it is the most expensive Brazilian television series in history.

The six-episode drama ‘chronicles Senna’s racing career, during which he ultimately claimed three world championships, as well as his life and relationships, and his lasting legacy that has brought significant change to the ultra-dangerous sport’.

Although reviews from critics have been mixed, viewers have praised the show.

‘I’ve watched a lot of racing movies and series, but this series about Senna is the best I’ve ever seen, possibly even one of the best series ever,’ Dimitrije posted on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘This does justice to this fantastic human being and his entire legacy. Congratulations to Netflix for this wonderful tribute,’ Sonny shared.

‘Thoroughly enjoyed this series. The details are incredible! Had me engaged from start to finish. Superb acting! Highly recommend. You do not have to be a motorsport fan!’ Jenny added.

Meanwhile on X, Rebecca wrote: ‘Ugly crying now having finished Senna. If you are a fan, or love F1, cars, or just stories of beating the odds and winning, becoming a hero you need to watch. Beautifully done, the races had you at edge of your seat & if you didn’t already you will love Senna.’

The series was in development for over a decade, with the cars built two years before cameras even started rolling such was the attention to detail.

Speaking of Senna’s legacy, Gabriel said Brazilians got behind the driver after he made it to the top of a ‘rich person’s sport’.

‘In the early ’90s, Brazil was having a hard time economically. Every Sunday when he was racing, it was a day to celebrate amid all the bad things that were happening to our people. It used to be a dot of joy amid it all,’ he told Queue.

‘Senna always, more than anything, made sure that people around the world knew that he was Brazilian. He was so proud of being Brazilian. He was talking to Brazilians all the time. He was connected to Brazil all the time. So, I think that’s what really connected him with our people.’

Born and raised in São Paulo, Senna competed in Formula One from 1984 to 1994 and won three Formula One World Drivers’ Championship titles with McLaren.

At the time of his death he also held the record for the most pole positions – 65 – and won 41 Grands Prix across 11 seasons.

During the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Senna he died hit a concrete retaining wall at around 145mph and was raced to hospital.

His injuries were so severe he lost 4.5 litres of blood, and an on-site tracheotomy was performed on the racetrack.

His state funeral was attended by an estimated three million people.

Senna is streaming on Netflix.
