Boy George says he was once a ‘b***h’ to a pop icon – just weeks after admitting his ‘not very nice’ comments about Liam Payne.

The Culture Club singer, 63, revealed his regret over saying Payne was ‘off his nut’ shortly before the former One Direction star’s death.

Payne died in October, aged just 31, after falling from a hotel balcony in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires – he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said: ‘I put a message under a post saying “He’s off his nut”, which wasn’t very nice, but I felt it. I felt like he was out of control.

‘When [Payne’s death reached the news], it just hit me, the same way that Amy Winehouse’s [death] hit me – because it felt so senseless.’

And in a month of confessions for the songwriter and TV personality, whose real name is George O’Dowd, he’s lifted the lid on a recent interaction he had with Madonna.

‘I was in this room with all Madonna’s friends and she didn’t say hello. RuPaul [Charles] and Madonna are quite similar: if they don’t like you, everyone around them has to hate you too.’

He continued, while speaking to The Independent: ‘It was like being at school with the cool kids.’

And back in the 1980s, when Boy George was ruling the charts with Culture Club, he once had another unfortunate brush with his pop rival during her Like a Virgin phase.

However, he’s confessed that this one was on him, and now regrets his behaviour towards her.

It’s rumoured that, when Madge walked over to him backstage at an event and shook his hand, he thought, ‘Ugh, I don’t know where it’s been.’

Nowadays, he looks on it differently: ‘I have been a total b***h, there’s no denying it. And to her credit, she never responds. Very Leo [the star sign].’

While George and Madonna have never feuded with each other, the Karma Chameleon hitmaker and the Hung Up star haven’t exactly seen eye to eye either.

In November, he told Sky News: ‘Over the years we sort of met each other, but there’s never been any kind of warmth necessarily on either side.’

That doesn’t mean it’s soured him on her music, however: ‘But I am a fan [of Madonna] – with me, if I like the music, I don’t necessarily have to be best friends with the person. I can like things without being petty.’

And he says things have mellowed between them over the years: ‘When you’re young, everything’s a competition. As you get older, you get a bit more confident about who you are – you’re able to enjoy things without feeling threatened.

‘In the ’80s, all of us were in competition with each other… nowadays I’m kind of able to enjoy a lot of bands that I hissed at in the past, you know.’
