The Outer Worlds 2 knows what you want from a sequel (Microsoft)

The funniest trailer of The Game Awards 2024 was for The Outer Worlds 2, which will also launch on PlayStation 5 next year.

While not in the same league as role-playing genre hallmarks like The Witcher 3 or Fallout, The Outer Worlds was a great game in desperate need of an expanded sequel.

Judging by a new trailer at The Game Awards, that’s exactly what we’re getting – with a dramatic narrator promising it’ll ‘certainly be two times bigger’ even though it took ‘three times longer to make’.

The trailer takes other amusing punches at video game sequels, describing The Outer Worlds 2 as having ‘everything that should have been in the first game’ with ‘more action, more weapons, and more… graphics?’

Developer Obsidian Entertainment also mocks its own history with sequels in the clip, describing themselves as the studio behind Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and ‘Fallout 3 part 2’, aka Fallout: New Vegas.

While it certainly looks more impressive visually, the biggest announcement is that it’s coming to PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox Series X/S and PC. The original Outer Worlds was released on all platforms, but that game had been in the works prior to Microsoft’s acquisition of developer Obsidian in 2018.

The sequel being on PlayStation 5 is another example of Microsoft’s multiplatform push in recent years, with former Xbox exclusives Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Sea Of Thieves all coming to other consoles recently. Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, which just launched on Xbox, is also set to come to PlayStation 5 next year.

The original Outer Worlds also arrived on Nintendo Switch, so it’s possible this sequel is planned for Nintendo’s next console too.

While Microsoft usually has a big presence at The Game Awards, having revealed the Xbox Series X console there in years prior, this was the only major Xbox announcement at the 2024 ceremony.

As such, it’s possible the company is holding back announcements for another Xbox Developer Direct, which has taken place in January over the past two years.

When will The Outer Worlds 2 be released?

The Outer Worlds 2 is set to be released in 2025 on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will also be available on day one for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.

Alongside The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian is also set to release action role-playing game Avowed next year, which will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC – but not PlayStation 5 – on February 18, 2025.
