The Hobbit actor Manu Bennet has revealed how he ‘almost severed’ his hand in a horror crash.
The 55-year-old star, who played Azog the Defiler in the trilogy based on J.R.R Tolkien’s 1937 fantasy classic and The Lord of the Rings appendices, was in a terrifying dune buggy accident a couple of months ago.
Although he didn’t reveal exactly how the crash happened, Manu recalled how the off-road vehicle ‘flipped’ and essentially became a ‘bear trap’ around his hand.
He shared his X-ray on Instagram, and insisted the actual image was ‘too graphic’ to post on social media.
‘Given so many friends have asked here is an X-ray of the multiple fractures to my hand caused when it was crushed by the roll bar of a dune buggy as it flipped,’ he wrote.
‘Pretty much like a bear trap, my hand was eviscerated through the middle. Image is too graphic for Insta but extremely lucky that my tendons remained intact during the heavy crush.’

The roll-bar is meant to act as a built-in safety feature to protect people in the buggy if it rolls over.
He paid tribute to medical staff at Rashid Hospital in Dubai, noting that they ‘literally saved’ his hand.
‘I’m indebted & forever thankful to the staff at Rashid Hospital, Dubai & my surgeon “The Maestro” Dr Nebosjka, who literally saved my hand,’ he continued.
‘Most of all, thank you to God for watching over me. It could have been a lot worse & I truly count my blessings.’

In another post, he shared a snap of himself shirtless in the pool with his hand in view with stitches in between the knuckles of his ring and middle fingers, while his digits appeared swollen.
‘Having almost severed my hand two months ago in a nasty dune buggy accident, you can see the stitches in my hand from the last surgery,’ he wrote.
‘I’ve come to truly appreciate the body God granted me & how vulnerable any of us are to losing these gifts & this greatest gift of life #grateful #healing #rehabilitation.’

A fan asked in the comments about the mobility in his hands in the aftermath of the crash, and Manu insisted he’s ‘working back towards full mobility’.
He appears to still be in Dubai, having posted other snaps of himself relaxing at a spa following his accident.
When he was just 15, Manu’s mother and brother died in two separate car crashes.
He went to audition at the studio of his then-girlfriend (who was a ballet dancer) which gave him an outlet to his grief, as he previously told Stuff: ‘For me, art was a necessity.’

‘You find your education in life based sometimes on what you want, but sometimes on what you need,’ he added. ‘And I really needed that expression to move forward.’
Manu went onto play warrior-slave Crixus in the Spartacus series, while he spent months ‘hauling stone’ on building sites in New South Wales.
‘It really did force me out of my comfort zone,’ he said during a Q&A. ‘And digging out those swimming pools in Sydney mansions gave me that whole upstairs-downstairs feeling, which would prove vital in bringing the character to life.’
