Despite some being left ‘yelling at their screens’, Netflix viewers are flocking to a new disaster series.
La Palma follows a Norwegian family holidaying on the Spanish island who, along with many others, face disaster when a young researcher discovers alarming signs of an imminent volcanic eruption.
Created by Martin Sundland (The Quake), it stars Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal.
The four-part series begins with tourists being killed during a freak accident aboard a boat, with the family – Fredrik, Jennifer and their kids, Sara and Tobias – arriving on the island a few days later.
However, panic quickly sets in after geological researchers Marie and Haukur discover the impending eruption could not only devastate the island but put millions of lives at risk by also triggering a massive tsunami.
They then face an uphill battle begging authorities to take action.

Although the series is currently the most watched TV show on the streaming service, it’s divided viewers.
‘Got me on the plot before I watched it. Seemed like it was going to be a good disaster series… until you start watching it. Cheesy to the max. So many unrealistic scenarios and bad acting!’ Madison posted on Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently holds a rating of 30%.
‘Oh dear…. shockingly bad in so many ways. Acting and overdubbing very poor, scenes cheap and nasty and the plot cringe worthy. Based on some hypothetical scenarios but these are stretched beyond fiction,’ Mark shared.
‘Life is too precious to waste it watching this thing,’ Luigi added.

Some even said the series had them ‘yelling at the screen’.
However, their opinions were at odds with others.
‘The show was a positive surprise for me. I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did. Well written and directed and a nice overall message on climate change. Some scenes were too slow and redundant but overall, I definitely recommend it, if you enjoy the genre,’ Polina posted.

‘What a fantastic TV show! It’s really well written and keeps you on the edge all the time,’ Nara shared.
‘I really enjoyed it. I binged it all in one night. The storyline was believable until the ending. But a very binge worthy season indeed,’ Corrine added.
Although the series’ extreme disaster scenes might go a bit overboard, there is in fact an active volcano on the Canary Islands.
As depicted in the series, the volcano last erupted in 2021, which unfolded over months and destroyed 3000 buildings and over 70kms of roads, with seven thousand people evacuated too.
La Palma is streaming on Netflix.
